Met a guy with a 67 today, couple questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

It was pretty clean. It had one of those Fireman (is that what it's called?) rear step bumpers, the thing was huge, at least twice the width of a regular step and it had power steering, the pump was smaller than mine but it had a small pump like looking thing under it that was connected to a sideways shock under the front axle. He said it was original. Anybody know what this is? He said the steering was smoother than his 99 Burb.

the shock sounds like a steering stablizer but it might also be a weird power assist steering setup that uses a hydrolic ram rather than being connected to the steering box

That is the stock power assist that you got in the 67's and early 68's. Somewhere in mid 68? they switched to the power gear box set up.

sounds like the old school power assist to me....almost like the one on my 930 case tractor, F#%d also used a similar assist in the late 60's and some even in the early 70's if I remember right.

That's the good ol' add-on power assist. As was mentioned before, Chevy used it 67-68.

A lot of medium- and heavy-duty trucks still use that setup. The International in my care has that setup as well. Word of warning: when integral power steering goes out, it's bad but livable. When add-on (linkage) power steering goes out, steering becomes a two-man job.
