I am.
I've had it for a while. It's been run with a 3 speed manual, 4 speed manual and a TH-350. It's had a wild cam and an RV cam. MPG varied everytime and depended on the driving habits I had at the time, but anywhere from 10-15 or so. Mostly around 11 or 12 though. It's bored .040", deck and heads are shaved a bit, 1.7:1 roller rockers with screw in studs, headers, stock chevy spreadbore intake with a holley 600 cfm carb. Crane cam and rhodes lifters. It runs good, but due to the lack of cubic inches and a stall converter on the tranny, it's not a tire smoker. But it will easily push the truck over 100 mph. HG

I've got one in the '69 2wd w/a 4 speed. I like it, but haven't driven it enough to give mileage #'s. I'd expect it to be in the 12-14 range.
I believe it's a mid-60's motor that has been rebuilt w/ stock components. Not a lot of power (2 bbl), but certainly enough for a occasional-use pickup. Paul

I have a 283 that I'll be installing when my truck goes through it's 2nd buildup. It's .60 over, steel crank, milled double hump heads, Duntov cam, Vette ramhorns, trying for a 67 hot rod look. Still need to find either an aftermarket crossram manifold or a 3X2 intake and carbs. I've run 283's in other cras and was pretty happy with them. They are real high winding and peppy if you build them right.

I'm running a 283 with no proformance upgades in my '69 K10. It's coupled to a th350...I never really got any accurate gas mileage numbers yet. I like personally like the 283 (tho obiously not original to my Truck). My Truck is a daily driver in the summer and it proforms well enough.
Presently I'm looking for a proper 4 bbl intake for it to run a 4 bbl carb. Presently due to the Pervious Owner it's running a 4bbl carb on a 2 bbl intake with some sorta adapter/spacer to make it work (not well I might add). That is prolly my biggest issue with it thus far.

I ran 1 .060 over in my old 71. the truck ran an M 21 Muncie, & 3.73 gears.....just a good build & balance on the shortblock, she ran 300 hp 350 heads, & a factory 350 cam, headers/ duals. the old truck would knock down 16.5 to the gallon on the hyway(driven easy) .....those 3.73's eat the fuel , if you wind em up!The old truck had a small4 brl Holley (450 cfm economizer), & really performed well.......just be aware that there is no substitute for cubes......unless its more cubes , or a BLOWER! loook at 383-406.....they will eat some fuel......but man do they run! I have a original non overhauled 170,000 mile 283 2 bbl from a 67 truck in my 1970 C10 to replace the shot 6 banger. My trans is a 4 speed manual with overdrive and 3.73 gears, 2000 rpm @ 60 mph. Pulls her down the road just fine, but not a racer. Haven't checked mileage, but gas gauge seems to move pretty fast toward empty. Have a liitle blowby and I'm sure a rebulid would give a little more power and mileage. I just might rebuild it just to be different when it needs it. Probably try to find better heads, a performer intake and carb, a small cam around 200 @.050 and headers, HEI, .060 overbore = 292 cubes and she would run sweet I think.

My wife's '63 has a rebuilt 283. It was installed by the P.O. It got about 16 mpg with a two barrel. We put a stock iron 4 barrel manifold with an Edelbrock 600 and factory HEI on it. Not sure of the current milage, the odometer took a crap about ten years ago. It runs great and was a daily driver for years.

283
thanks for the input. I've got a 67 I've thought of rebuilding, throwing on some 80's 305 heads, mild cam etc. Thought of doing one to be different as well.

283 in mine & I'm lovin it. It was a fairly fresh rebuid by PO, it ran really well when I first bought it with an Edelbrock 2 barrel/Rochester & headers. I've since added an Air Gap intake, Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, headers/proflow's with a 2 1/2" "X" exhaust. I have a HEI (in my closet) and that will be going on next. The thing is a blast to drive, I'm not that speedy of a guy (in my truck) but going through the gears (not WOT or anything) every now & then always creates a .

I posted earlier about kind of liking my 283. My only reservation about the 283 is the piston weight. Go to the Kb-silvolite website and do some research. There is plenty of room inside for atleast a 6 in rod and even a 6.25 but nobody makes stock shelf item pistons for that. Now at 1.9 rod/stroke ratio a 283 doesn't really "need" longer rods, but it sure could use lighter pistons, and a longer rod gets you lighter pistons. If I'm going to throw heavier pistons up and down, it just as well be a larger bore, with a higher pin height, hence longer stroke, longer rod too. Any Thoughts anyone.........?????
