Gearing Up
I've got a 83 dualy that I just finished up and it has a 454 with the old standard three speed with low, I havn't looked to see what the gear ratio is in the rear but it is to low, has anyone know how or what I can do to change the gear ratio in the rear, what would work? I wish I had another gear to go into. You guys with the one tons know what I mean. Got it all together, now I can't aford to drive it. Any ideas.

Do you plan doing much towing with you truck ?

I pull a fifth wheel camper but I have enough motor to do the job. I use to pull it with a 350 motor so this 454 should do ok even with a higher rearend.

Dana 70 gears are easy to come by. Most likely 4.10 or 4.56 in your 1-ton. 3.54 should be considerable improvement.

most likely they're 4.56s. i wouldnt go any lower than 4.10 if you're using it to pull a trailer of any weight, which a 5er is of considerable weight, or it would be bumper pull. 3.54s are a hideous idea, i wouldnt even consider a gear like that on any truck that if they werent in it from the factory.

Sorry it took so long to get back,in my line of work we are realy busy right now. I like the idea of the 4:10's What truck do you think would have them allready under it, I would rather change the whole rearend then rebuild the whole rearend.
