What to do with 16.5 in. wheels? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My turd '77 has 16.5 in wheels. It currently has at least 6-year-old tires on it that are dry-rotted and just downright dangerous (I haven't even driven the truck, and it was towed to my house). This is my beater, and that's probably all it will ever be. It has 31x10.50x16.5 on back, and 9.50s on the front. Do I:

a) find some tires to fit the wheels? I've looked quite a bit, and there's almost nothing out there in 16.5. I think the 31x10.50x16.5 is what I would do all the way around if I keep these wheels

or

b)buy some late-model 8-lug wheels in 16 in.? It's be easier to find tires, and cheaper, too. I see some plain painted new ones on ebay for about $250-275 shipped.

Keep in mind I paid $300 for the entire truck, and I have another project that requires more of my money right now. I just want it to roll somewhat safely down the road.

search junkyards in your area. they're bound to have a set of 16" 8 lug wheels to fit your truck, and should be alot cheaper than the EBay wheels, due to not having to ship them.

You could always buy some H2 wheels. They are 17" and commonly sell on ebay WITH new tires for under $500. They are tall though...

I saw some of those...I think if I was trying to turn this into a nicer truck, I might go that route. Pretty good idea, though!

You might try a swap meet. I have seen the painted silver rims with tires mounted at swap meets. I haven't paid much attention to the price for 16's but they might be what your looking for.

I concur going with (b).
You could probably find some cheap aftermarket wheels (like Chrome Mods, Daytonas, etc.) at the local discount tire store if you do not want to search for some used ones.

BTW, it's probably better to go with different wheels especially if your originals are split rims since it's hard (and expensive) to find someone to work on them.

Hey Earl Filter - I have a set of 8 luggers I've been trying to get rid of. They're actually some pretty nice aftermarkets, but they're taking up space in my garage and there's not much interest in my area for 4x4 wheels. Anyway - If you're in Cali, PM me and maybe we can make a deal...

What size tire would one use for the 17" Hummer H2 wheels? The stock tire size only has 1 or 2 tire choices, and is very expensive. Is there an off size that has more choices and has a reasonable price?
