??Custom Bowtie 6061 Side Markers??, What do you Think??

Ok I thought introducing these on this board would be the thing to do to get good input. And I thought you guys should see them first. Seeing as you've all been a big help to me.

This is the deal, I need to get a ball park figure on how many of these things could sell. So to know how many to make on the first production run. I have access to a machine shop, and they will be 6061 CNC aluminum covers. They will require the purchase of I beleive 85-90 Full size chevy van sidemarkers, these lenses are brighter low profile design, and the light is dead center. The bowtie lights up beautifully.


I would like to get a idea on what the common working man would pay for these. I spoke to one guy allready, he told me $100.00 for 4. And I would sell them in pairs, most likely. I'd like all your guys input, and comments. I've had them on my truck for like 3 days now, and allready have had 4 interested people! LOL

But I also have a couple other products that I'll soon go public with. I feel strongly that are truck will become more popular than they allready are.

Would these directly replace my side markers on my 70? I like them becasue there unique. How much is a stock marker 10-15 $?
I'd like to see $80 for a set of 4 (2 front and 2 rear) $100 seem a bit steep but hey I'm always lookin for a deal.

These will work on 68-72 Chevy truck, blazers, and Subs, also on full size Chevy Vans from 70s to like 90 I think but not positive on that one.

I thought of GMC ones but for right now I just have to see the intrested in the bowties.

As I stated above you must get 85-90 Full size Chevy van sidemarkers from the junk yard or new from chevy, or JC Whitney has them I think. I picked up 4 at a junk yard for $10.00 These covers won't work on standard or custom 68-72 Chevy truck sidemarkers.

They look great. Seems to me if you are going to market them properly you would want to include the necessary lights and hardware to do it. I would say they are worth 50.00 a pair with the lights and 25.00 without??? Can't wait to see your other ideas.

Marketing them with the smooth lenses would be a good idea I think. It is a good loking item too.

Not sure yet, I have access to a full blown CNC shop, that can make them easy, but I'm not sure how many to make on the first production run. Also I'm trying to still find a cheap outlet for the lenses themselves. Most Junkyards have them. they come factory on Full size 85-96 chevy vans.

This place is way cheaper than JC Whitney, and it'll give you a idea on what a far junk yard price would be, which is about 10.00 for 4.

This is the best I can do right now, and I still have to research how well these will sell.

I saw something like that for tail lights this past weekend in Charlotte. I think they look great but my only question is using the bowtie. Would it matter that that is a registered trademark?

Good Point. You will want to check that out. If you are seriously thinking about going to market you may want to speak with someone like Wes or GMC Paul. I would think these guys would be able to help you out. You don't want to open yourself up for trouble. I think you have a product that will sell, but you are going to have to go about it the right way or you will get burned. If you can afford an attorney I recommend getting some advice in these matters. You want to protect your personal assets anytime you open shop.

Yes I've protected my self and consulted my attorney. Also I've contact GMC Paul waiting on a response, also thinking of contacting Early Classic.

I actually came up with this idea years ago when I was in the Navy, I've also made billet aluminum sloted covers for the tail lights, I know the guy that has them on his 2wd Blazer right now, I made him a set, he lives somewhere, in NewPort News VA. That was back in 1998. When I had my 4x4 72 that I converted to 2wd.

I like em'. i would probably try runnin' them on the truck. I agree with the earlier post, $50 a pair with plastic and all hardware. And maybe $30 pair without lights / plactic. The other thing to think about is also the posibility of marketing them as "paintable" to match the paint of your truck. Great Idea!! Darren

i like the front turn light covers.If you made them I would buy them. But, being 14 years old and not having a truck, i'll probably wait. I think $50 for 4 is reasonable but any more would be a bit much

I'm also working on a LED custom version of these, that would be lower profile, and barely stick out past the sheet metal.

As for the 71-72 front bumper parking light lense covers they are in the works to, but are so limited to 71-72 that the sales wouldn't be as high as the sidemarkers.

I thought of anodizing, or powder coating, but I don't know how easy it'd be to match colors. And you could allways buy unpolished covers, and paint them your own color.

man those are great, but i think 100 bucks is sorta steep, i worked in a machine shop for about 8 months and wish i wouldve thought of that. But i think 100 is a bit too much..like no offense or anything..but once u have the tooling and everything set up...if it is cnc too..it takes minutes..if not seconds...so maybe you should give us board members some screamin deals..thanks... but good thinkin..whats next?

You must understand that the programming, and materials, and the time involved in start up, all has to be figured in. Also these have to be polished so that part alone will take more time than the machining once the CNC is set-up anyway. And its hard to say if the first production run will even sell anough to break even on the start up costs. Thats why getting input here is helpful.

It maybe a good idea to have them anodized, or powder coated chrome like finish. To eliminate time it take to polish. But this is all in the trial, and error stage.
