I`d try this in the post-88 section, since they had 5 speeds.

The late model truck 5 speeds work nice but most require electrical operated speedo's. I ran one for 5 years (96 truck 5 spd) with no problems but the speedo thing is a PITA. If you plan on running the truck--racing etc.--you are going to have to spend some $$ to get a 5 speed that will hold up. I spent $1,000. for my setup with hydralic clutch, reworked drive shaft, reworked clutch linkage, etc. You may not see the gas savings soon enough as you will get a few more MPG but---do the math. Unless you really drive the heck out of the truck, it will take years to recover and come out ahead. Might be better off hooking up a gear vender overdrive behind your existing trans or go with a original truck 4 speed. You will have an 8 speed capability! This way you can pull the add-on overdrive when you sell the truck and move it to the next one. Often see these OD on e-bay for around $1,000-1,200. used and guaranteed. Good luck

i bought a 90 chevy truck 5 speed tranny (nv3500) with the driveshaft and all of the hydraylic clutch parts for $180 bucks of craigslist. i haven't installed mine yet, but i know it does have an electric speedo sender. i'm starting to see a lot of 88 and newer trucks in junkyards, a couple of them had the 5 speeds. if you have an engine with a lot of torque you might want to find a nv4500, it's a heavier duty tranny. i just saw in my truckn mag that gm came out with 6 speed turbo hydromatic. i bet that will cost you, though. there's deals out there, good luck!

What i'm needing is just an overdrive Tranny. something that has a less that 1:1 "Last" gear. If the 4 speeds from our years are such as the one in question then hey i'm all over that one. but are they?

In the early 80s there were 3 speed + o/d 4 speeds. The NVs should be abundant and cheapest way to go.GearVendors is the hot set-up,$2500+/-new and driveshaft costs. The only swap that won`t require d-shaft work is a 4 speed car trans, but no o/d.The first trans I mentioned,if you locate one, would be straight forward and cheap.May not need d-shaft work. There`s always the 700R4 route.

I used a manual trans from an '81 chevy half ton, 3 speed plus overdrive, Almost direct bolt in except for the shifter, overall length same as 3 spped manual and the turbo 350. Fits standard bellhousing too. It is a gm bolt pattern ,chrysler/new process or is it new venture now ? A833 style trans. Pefect for me, little hard to find though. I did a lenghty post/ reply session on the forum board last fall detailing all, too bad search is down.
