Quick Question - 4x4 With Big Block
Was A Big Block Ever Offered In The 4 X 4 Version Of 67 To 72 Trucks With Automatic Or Manual Transmissions? All References I've Seen Are Two Wheel Drive Only. I Had A 1969 Lwb Two Wheel Drive That My Cousin Now Has. I Now Have A 1970 3/4 Ton Lwb M/t With A Semi Tired 350 In It. I Have A Fresh 396 That I Would Like To Install In It. But All References In Parts Books, say For Header Applications Exclude The Big Block In 4 X4 Applications Especially With A Manual Tranmission. Anyone With A Way Around This Issue??

I'd venture a guess that an automatic swap would be easier. I have a friend who used to have a '69 4x4 with a 396 and automatic. Just be sure to use the big block motor and frame mounts.

all of the ones i have owned or built i put big blocks in , you dont need to use big block motor mounts or towers or frame crossmember ect , if its just going to be a fun cruiser depending on the size of your valve covers you will need to put to small dents in the fire wall , maybe the size of a golfball for valve cover clearance only , if you are running a body lift it is easier , or you can move your mounts an inch or 2 forward and elimnate the need for altering the firewall

I used Hooker super comps on my 70 chev 4x4 4-speed. The part # is 2817 and -1 for ceramic coating. Mine fit Killer. This is like the 4th set of hookers like this I have used. Hope this helps.

Here the link linky to the headache I had on fitting my bb. You will find some people that have to do not firewall mods at all, some that do a little and others that have big problems. I still don't understand why it varies.

Re: Quick Question - 4x4 With Big Block
Hey Yukon Jack,
Thinking about taking on this headache. Would love to go back and review your experience. Seems the linky no longer works. Any chance you could re-post it? Thanks a bunch! |

Re: Quick Question - 4x4 With Big Block
I think I read that the first BBC in a chevy 4x4 pickup was in 1977 but in 1 ton trucks.
I moved the motor mount perch forward 1 inch when I put my 402 BBC in my 67. Has a 700R4 with a NP208. I like the motor mounts/clamshells/perches from a BBC 2wd square body. There will be some issues to resolve. Like Yukon Jack, I raised the engine 1/2 inch on mounts. You will be playing with other clearances. I did not have to modify the firewall and I run a Hydro boost. https://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vbo...d.php?t=615038

I don't have an active website but I was able to get the page to load on my computer and at least take screenshots.
