Need help hooking up my batt. gauge??
Hello
I'm wondering where to hook up the wires for the Batt gauge? It the OEM one for the gauge cluster. Right now I have a 14g wire running to the small wire that comes off the Batt.(fused) And the other I put right on the big 12g wire on the 3 wire Alt.(fused) Is this right or am I going to have a melt down? Any links to posts? Thanks in advance

This is how the ga. is wired and the wiring diagrams. also there are 4 amp fuses in the wires located left front eng comp. and by the batt. Those lumps where the b/w wire arrow points at. John

I'll take a look at my haynes but does anybody know in english where
these two wires go, those drawings are crazy. |

You will find the 18ga black wire fuse holder by the terminal block and batt on pass side and the black/white fuse holder on drivers side in the head light area . They go through the firewall and are in the dash cluster plug. Hope this helps some. John

I don't know if this will answer your question directly or not, because you may not even have all the wires under your hood. The basis of the circuit works on the principal of two hoses. One is small (14 guage) and the other isn't (18 guage). Amperage is flow and the alternator/battery is the source(s). If your battery has draw (needs charged) then the flow across both wires will go to the battery. If you are discharging (the accessories are drawing more than is produced by the alternator) then the flow is going the other way and discharging the battery.
The black wire needs to terminate in the same locations that the charging wire for the battery does at both ends. You want the black/white wire smaller because the amp guage can't handle much without melting down (thus the 4 amp fuses at both ends, because the flow will come from both sides). Your truck should have two points for the black/white and red wires to meet up. One is the junction point on the driver side that is a big "bunch" of wires from the alternator, and the other is the block on the passenger side fender. The black/white goes from the driver junction through the firewall, to the amp meter, out the firewall, across the top of the core support to the passenger block. At the bulkhead connector, they are pretty much right on top of each other.

I'm switching from idoit lights to gauges, so I have nothing there.
My pass. fender has no junction box. Just a wire off the Batt. Right now I have a 14g wire running to the small wire that comes off the Batt.(fused) And the other I put right on the big 12g wire on the 3 wire Alt.(fused) So this is wrong then? |

If the wires you are hooked up to are the 18ga black and the 18ga black/white fused 4amp wires I dont see why it shouldn't work that way. Do you have those wires going to your cluster plug or you wired direct to ammeter? Good luck with it John

They are in the cluster pin. I changed the wiring of the pin with easy from a
printout from a web site. So I guess I'll fuse it up and try it. |
