i think i am gonna mini spool it. what do yall think
after thinking about it for a long time and asking lots of questions. i am going to mini spool my rear end so i can get both tires turning. i think it will be ok as long as i am careful on turns and dont drive it in the rain. i know i have talked about this alot but if anyone has any feedback in either direction let me hear it because it am planning on buying and installing the mini spool this weekend. i welcome all comments on this

I wouldn't do it unless you are only going to use your truck for drag racing. It causes wheel hop when you make sharp turns,wears tires out alot sooner, and if you drive your truck every day you'll have to change your universal's alot. I just took mine out because of those reasons.

I've been thinking about the PowerTrax units. I'm hoping to be traction challenged with the engine swap.

Your truck would be almost undriveable on the street. Especially in bad weather. Unlike a locker your tires would be locked together 100% of the time. A locker will atleast unlock when you let off the gas going around turns.

I had a 73 pickup that had a defective positrac and it locked ip solid. When you when thru a turn at over 5 mph it whould squeal the inside tire and over 10 mph it would actally smoke it. A spool has no business on the street, and if you put it in you will hate it and take it back out. If you got to have one, just buy it and put it on your workbench for a paper weight, because thats where it will wind up. lol

My college roommate put a mini spool in his Chevelle 15 years ago. It was terrible. Tires pop and chirp around turns and it drastically reduced the turning radius. When trying to pull in a parking space, you'd turn the wheel to go in the spot and the car would push outside. You'd have to back up and turn in several times. Also hard on tires as you can see. You are also supposed to replace the spider gear pin with a hardened one. If you compare the case of an open diff to the limited slip diff you wouldn't do this either. It doesn't have the added webbing and obvious increase in strength. Bad idea unless you are going to race your truck at a dirt track. I know they are expensive because of the labor, but IMO, the Eaton posi is the ONLY way to go for a street/strip vehicle. I've said this for years on this board, and a lot of people have found out the hard (read expensive) way, that's what they should have done to begin with.

I once biult what we call in mn a texas gocart and i just welded the spiders up. worked grait. it was a 72 lamans. cut the body of and had lots of fun.

i am convinced
thanks guys for the feedback. i have decided to save my money and buy a powertrack system. i would hate to put in the mini and break something or have and accident. i have to follow the same advice that i give my students "you get what you paid for" so i am going to pay that little extra and get something i can use both at the track and on the street.

Air Locker
Or you could install an ARP Air Locker. Then you could use a single trac rearend in your truck, and when you wanted the positraction just activate the Air Locker.
