Transfer case /old faithful
My 2.5 year old son and I took the 68 for a ride to the scale so I can get it regestered, 4800 lbs. On the wy back, smoke filled the cab, I pulled over and couldn't believe my eyes. The transfer case had blown all the gear oil straight up and it was pouring down from the crossmember and everything under was covered. What would cause this? could this just be a seal or Am I in deep.

Is it coming out the breather on the top of the t case? Is is a auto or manual tranny? I had a 72 4x4 blazer that did the same thing, the seal between the tranny and t case was wasted so it filled the t case with tranny fluid.

It is a auto, the trans fluid level is ok, and the fluid is black gear oil.

I'm Not Sure, I'll Check Tonight. Would Driving It In 4 Wheel At High Speed Cause This?

Is it a rockwell T221? Was the case hot when it happened? I'd guess it is time for some new seals. While you have it open, you can see if it has any debris in the case.

If the truck is an auto, which has been swapped in from a later model, I am willing to bet it also has a newer t-case (NP205 most likely).

if it is an np 203 use sae 10 w 30 or 10 w 40 motor oil the last time i had it changed they were going to use gear oil i am just glad i was there
