First Time Poster Who Needs Help with 96 Bed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Greetings All,

I am the proud owner of a 70 step side that I have finally got the time to start working on! I know lots of people hate the idea of doing this but, I have decided to put a 96 bed on my truck and I am in need some help from those who have done this before me. How did you mate the new bed to the frame ? The easiest way I can figure is to use a section of 2 1/2 square tubing across the front and back. Looking forward to getting the new bed on and getting her back on the road. Thanks for the help- Eric

'96 bed on a '70 step...GET A ROPE! Just kidding...it's your truck and I have seen some nice trucks done with late model beds...just not my style. Welcome to the board from Kent, WA.

WElcome to the board. The late model step be can bring a lot of contraversy. But yes you will need to have some extra bracing to bring it up to the correct mounting height. If I rememeber from one of the other members it is around 2". You might have to experiement a little to get the exact height, but your idea with the 2.5" tubing sounds like a great start.

I used the tubing welded onto a couple of flat plates. The flat plates had holes drilled that lined up with frame (this alllowed me to mount the tube to the frame in original holes). I then drilled a holes through the tubing (all the way through) to allow me to bolt the bed to the tubing. Thats how it worked for me. I think the front tubing was 2 x 3 1/2" and the back was 2" square (not sure anymore) And this is how the body lines up.
