Opinion's on LS2 Crate Motor

Does anyone have any experiance with this engine or have installed one. This price is hard to beat, but I am really ignorant when it comes to the new motors.

I wish I could afford that motor, it would really set off my 69. The smaller one is already over my budget. I am retired and have limited resouces.

From what you posted, I think you can add another couple thousand by the time you add all the pulleys, accessories, motor mounts, ECU and harness. Then you get to the transmission. But yes, they are a nice engine

I do not have an engine for this truck. I am strarting a frame up rebuild. The truck I bought for the frame did not have an engine. I have my frame bare except for the suspension and rear end. I have a 69 SWB Fleetside beater that I use for my driver, has GM Stock 350 crate, 700R4, MSD Pro Billet, and Edelbrock 1406 carb. I also have a 69 stepside 250 six, that needs to be restored. I have time to decide on the motor, unless I decide to get the LS2 crate motor, as I am sure GM will have it on sale for a limited time. I still need to get my frame finished. What suck's is I had the money put away for this project 10G's that would have finished my frame, wheels and motor but I had to use it. A sister had some money problems and wanted to sell 10 acres, which was adjacent to property I own and across the road from my house, so I bought it.

With the added cost this one may be out of reach for now, may have to settle for a cheaper engine or build my own.

Sounds good but you have to give up a lot of conveinences to live here. We drive 30 miles to shop at a decent grocery store. We drive 30 miles to see our family doctor. Any major medical is a trip to Tyler 1 1/2 hour drive or Houston 3 hours. We drive down a poorly maintained dirt road 1 mile to the nearest Farm to Market Road and 2 miles of which part is through the river bottom to get to US 59. However the peace and quit here is great that is untill deer season opens.
I do know what you mean about the realestate prices in CA. I had coworkers out there before I retired. When they came to Dallas, they were astounded at the homes we lived in. They even made more money than we did at the time due to the cost of living there

Actually it is not more powerful. Nor even close. The power potential of the LS2 is probably 150% better than the carbed ZZ4. Not to mention that the LS2 with decent exhaust will put down almost the advertised flywheel hp/tq numbers to the wheels.

From my experience ZZ4's put down about 330hp and 350tq at the wheels.

To be picky... 150% more than 330 would be a bit over 800 hp. but I grasp what you mean.

I was thinking about LS1 figures, not LS2 when I said the ZZ4 was more powerfull .. bad reading on my part. It will be, though, about half the price ready to run.

If your set an an LS based motor, you would be miles ahead by buying a low mileage salvage motor. You can get everything you need all at one time. I bout the LS1 for my 82 Blazer that way. I still spent quit a bit modifying the computer and harness, but saved tons over buying everything seperate....

330 x 1.5 = 495

I guess I should have said 140%...

But yeah you could look at a math problem from different angles.

Thanks for the responses, I do have some time before I need the motor. I still have some decisions to make on the front end and I need to finish stripping my frame and get it painted. I do like the idea of the used LS1 package and the ZZ4 as both would be sufficient power for me and would save a lot of money that could be spent on the cab

I'd go with the recommendation to start shopping for pull out. You could probably find a under 40k mile complete LS1, tranny, all accessories, wiring harness, etc for around 2,500. Give or take 500. Might be able to even score one with heads and cam. This is how I bought my set up well over two years ago. I paid a little more and it has more mileage but back then there weren't all the places selling them that there is now. Shipping from the northwest to Florida was 3-400 also. I could of pulled it off the crate and set it in a stand and ran it (except for a fuel pump/tank). I will end up probably only using the wiring harness, accessories and tranny but oh well.

And by the way, stock '98 F-body's usually cranked out a little 300RWHP. This was the first year for the LS1 in them.

Well as you know the lsX based motors are going to mount up differently, you may have to move some accessories around to clear the frame and all but I agree it will be a better motor. I just finished an install into my 68 it runs very strong for a "stock" motor. I did the salvage yard thing and bought a gen3 from a truck the 5.3 l motor those can be had pretty cheap. The may not be a true ls1 but they have the same architecher (spell?) and run great! you can do the same things to them as the car based ones.

The 5.3's are a member of the LS1 family as is the 6.0. Most of us that have used the F-body set up have been able to clear everything (accessories) except for maby a minor frame notch for the a/c comp on the r/h side. Kits are available to move the comp up high if desired.
