You will be getting some help soon but I just find it hard to see why anyone would put a governer on one of these except maby keeping their son or daughter from driving too fast. Wish I could help you but did not know you could put a governer on one of our trucks. I also am courious as to what you can do and where it is. Darnest thing I heard in a while. At least it was not set at 55. Think you are mad now. Good luck Someone know how to help him? By the way, I really love that '57 ragtop you have for sale. Lets see, what would the payments be on $150,00 for three years. Darn, I can not make the payments. Nice car, never had a rag top '57.

School busses (at least the ones my aunt drives in jersey) all have governors to keep them below the state speed limit of 65....

which is dandy, if the parkway didn't have hills that bog them down to 40 miles an hour, which is more dangerous than speeding since everyone does 90928748392 miles an hour on the effing parkway.

Now why exactly are you going over 85 miles an hour my friend? Isn't the national speed limit 70? I mean, no reason to go over 85 unless you're racing or something.

In Idaho on the interstates its 75 and in Montana I'm not sure where they settled at, but for a few years a few years ago it was no posted limit - "reasonable and prudent". Which on an empty highway in the middle of the day in the right car could be closer to 100.
Besides, if the limit is 70 and some guy is pulling a trailer at 60 and you need to pass him how fast do you think you'll need to go to get out of the oncoming lane as fast as you can?

Oh that was a good one I needed a laugh tonight!

I wasn't tryin' to be a shmo, i was just wondering why you would care about it being governed at 85, if it was for racing or something.

'Cause I know Ol Red ain't governed at 85.....

TH350c + 2.56 rear end = nice top-end

I don't know about you guys but it is no fun driving the speed limit. I know my 75 GMC has seen over 100 more times than I can count. I would be one unhappy camper to be limited to 85.
Also I have never heard of a governer on a truck that old.

Well Since No One Else Has Tried To Help I Will (try) I Believe A Govoner Is Carb Related So See If There Is Anything On It That Wont Let It Open All The Way If You Find Something Like That Take It Off And See If That Works I Am Just Guessing But It Could Be That Simple

The governor is the large iron piece in the engine compartment called the 305. You'll need to remove that to get the truck to go faster.
In all seriousness, mine has a 305 also, and it won't even get upto 85. Are you sure it's not that the rear-end gears are too steep and the engine runs out of steam at that RPM? Actually, what RPM are you hitting at 85? Does the truck bog down at that same RPM in every gear?

My 305 will spin the speedo needle from 0 all the away around to past 85 and straight up and down. It could go more but I was too scared to keep pushing it with the front suspension. These trucks have no governor. It's all about how you make your combo work. A little elbow grease and mods and she'll top 85 easy.

Yes the do have a governor in the tranny. The governor controls the flow of the tranny oil based on speed. It is the main component of the RPM shift points at WOT.
They don't have a govenor at the carb to keep speed down.

why do our trucks need governors? I know our truck is a brick, we're lucky for it to hit 65 with a 454. between having the aerodynamics of a brick and weighing more than a brick (7200 pounds curb), it IS a brick. why have a governor?

hmmmmm it probably has an aftermarket speedo sensor that has a secondary cable/block to limit how far open the carb is opened. Usually the gov will do one of two things: 1) bog it down to slow it down to about 80 then you can speed back up.. and down and up and down.. 2) just not let anymore throttle be applied preventing any faster speed unless you're going downhill with a tailwind and don't need to floor it.
Most factory Chevy govs are like #1 (I've had at least 15 different newer cars to thier limit, usually 85 or 95mph) but aftermarkets on older vehicles liek this are usually #2. Your case may have a factory installed option being a Cali Truck (they always screwed them up there first them brought the "options" everywhere else in the states).

As a side note I finally took my "new" burb (in sig) out on the open road last week, about 80 miles round trip and with its 454 it just "floated" at 80. Even the wife said it felt like a boat at that speed because how slow it reacted to the bumps (which was weird because as a 2500 you usually feel every tiny rock). I didn't take it much faster (maybe hit 85 once or twice) but that little trip cost me around $12 in gas (of course picked up 3 4x8 sheets of underlayment). Did have fun passing a f**d going uphill going from 65-80 in a short time (LOVE that 454 ROAR!!!).

Do you have aftermarket ignition system? The sound you are describing sounds like electronic rpm control..My MSD ignition will to this if I set it that way...I can limit the rpm at different settings. It is really a rev limiter, but in these trucks if it is set low, it will act like a governer.\
Hope this can be of some help.

I would be shocked to find a governer on a truck that old. Here is my theory.

I have owned a Cali car once. It was a 2.8L V-6 Chevy Citation. I loved that car and it definitely was a lot of fun to drive. It could beat a 305 powered Trans Am without a problem.

The problem I had was all of the Cali emission junk on it. The heating plate under the carb, the freakin 100+ dollar O2 sensor, etc.

So my first thought is......what's the cat like on your truck? I am thinking that it sounds like maybe a restriction in the exhaust. Have you checked the codes on the engine? Any sensor that is perhaps acting up on it?

Like I said, I don't know much about governers, I just find it hard to believe that your truck has one. I would start leaning towards exhaust restriction or faulty emission control devices.

Just me though.

rockman20 i think you have hit the nail on the head and as far as my carb gov. it was just a suggestion. has your tranny been rebuilt before the no faster than 85 crap started or has it been slow since you owned the truck. definatly have the exhaust checked for restriction

well as far as the cat goes shhhhh i dont have one lol and i replace the exaught last year but the a$$hole only put 1 1/2 pipes on it but it is true duals and it does have a flamethrower ignition on it with quite a bit of electronics it HAD a q-jet on it bt ive got a dif carb on it and havent had it running since i put the new carb intake on it but now its too late and im just gonna take it in the garage and tear it all back down and im lowering it and got a few other plans for the winter so i just dont know as long as the thing aint electronic and i pulled all the emissions outta it so hopefully its gone....

thanks alot, cb
