Need help on rear axle play..

Guys- my pass. side rear axle has 1/4" play in it. In and out, not up and down. It clunks when truck is pushed back and forth. I replaced the bearing and seal with a NAPA oversize bearing. That didn't help. The C-clip was'nt worn down that much! They're only about 1/4" to begin with. Did my axle grow longer or what!? This clunk has been there several years. I think it's grown a little over the years, but not much. Any ideas?

does your pickup have the original axles in it or have they been changed over to 5 bolt?

Since the carrier pin stops the travel inward and the slack is on one side, my thought would be that the axle gear has too much slack in it. It can be shimmed if that is the problem. It might be worth checking.

Its the original 6-lug axle, rear end, etc. By shimming, do you mean those dished washers on the little side gear?

never mind. I just found out the play comes out when you put the drum back on and tighten the wheel on. Duh! And the idiot of the week award goes to.... I think the clunk seems to come from the panhard bar, even though I put a poly bushing in it 5 yrs. ago.
