Flexplate/Torque
Ok been noticing a banging noise that was interminten and I had just replaced the flex plate a few months ago. I remember hearing on here that if the bolts come loose that it can cause this noise. but I checked the flexplate and the torque bolts & they are all tight. But the flexplate/torque together have some play. By this I mean the 2 connected will move foward towards the engine and backwards towards the tranny about ½ inch. What can cause this? And how can I fix it?

If your crankshaft is moving in and out of the block that far then you have a bad thrust bearing. Its the main bearing that sets your crank end play which should be about .005 instead of a 1/2 inch.
If it just looks like the flexplate is flexing that much you probably have a busted flexplate which would also cause a noise that can almost sound like a rod knock. The torque converter should slide back but only after its unbolted from the flexplate. Hope this helps |

Or possibly loose bolts on the crank hub.
