WTB: Axles

Does anybody in the DFW area have usable 5 lug axles that I can swap into my 69? I just need to get something in there so I can swap on the new rear wheels along with the new fronts (after the disc upgrade) until I start serious work on the 12 bolt..

Im almost positive your '69 rear will be too short to take 5 lug axles..so having yours redrilled may be a better option.

Thanks for the reply, but man that sucks. I was thinking I'd do the rear axle mods all at once - detroit locker, gears, c clip eliminator, moser axles, etc...just wanted something cheap for now

Don't know if this will help you or not, but I have a 10 bolt 5 lug leaf spring rear end out of a 78 1/2 ton just sitting and not being used. You are more than welcome to come and get it if you can use it. Free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, that's awfully generous of you, but I don't think it will help.

I was thinking early 70 axles were the same (except they're 5 lugs)...ah well we'll see what I can do. For now I'll be driving it around with the white wagon wheels and off road tires on the back along with Torq thrusts up front :P

Any '70 c-10 is 6 lug.

I know they went to wider rears mid '70 You may try looking for a whole 71-72 5 lug rear. Theres lots of parts in TX.

Bring them over, we can easily make 5 lug axles from your 6 lugs. I have a machine shop that will turn the centers down, we can spot and drill the holes in my jig. zip 75022 Total cost about $80 of machine work. You will only need 10 each 1/2"studs and 2 each 5 lug brake drums from a 71-72. You have to procure these anyway. Or I will buy your axles for $20 each if bearing surfaces are good.

Axle housings from 1970 - 1972 are all the same,yes 70's are 6 lug but 5 lug axles will bolt in,67-69 housings are narrower that the others...Been there and done that several times...

Right, I knew that at least 67-70 were 6 lug, I was just referring to the housing width on 70's (71, 72, etc) might be the same. I know I found a 12 bolt reference somewhere on the net, but I can't remember where.

I might have to get ahold of you guys there in Dallas. I really hate the thought of putting money into the stock axles, but I'm working two projects at once so I don't want to dump $1000+ in my rear end right now to do the entire thing.

Glad you are going through all this with The differential Housing , Axles and all . You have been Very instrumental in assisting me in a decision. I had never ran these chevrolet diffs,and had thought I really wanted to keep my 68 c-10 all chevy. Not Now. Going back to old reliable.9 " FORD. Thank You very much for the wake up call.

Hehe, glad I could help. I spent enough time with Fords, I don't need any of their parts on my Chevy though :P

I picked up a detroit locker the other day for the 12 bolt. After that I'll grab some aftermarket axles, new gears, and have the Ford housing ends welded on (well, I guess something of Ford's will be there but it won't be made by them at least). Probably will use Lincoln rear discs as well.

All that for the same or less than a built 9 inch, plus I don't get the minor power loss that goes with their pinion placement.
