new engine
How hard would it be to put a 92 F@rd 4.6 fuel injected engine and auto tranny in an 87 GMC, I have all engine parts and wiring harness and computer. I like the police engine and I have one, and I need a new engine in my truck.

Ya, I know. Im just wondering how hard it will be to get it to bolt up in the GMC. That engine was only used from 92-97 so it still runs strong and its fast and I got it and the tranny, alumminum drive shaft, radatior, y pipe, and all need parts to make it run for $100

It depends on how it bolts up. Look at the LS1 mounts for our trucks. They aren'tr anything more than a piece of plate that goes between the old motor mounts and the new ones. If you can fab metal, you can make it fit. That motor doesn't care what it rides in....

![]() if you have all cpu/wiring stuff with it then the rest should be mostly fab stuff, engine mounts, trans mount, driveshaft, massaging of firewall/floorboards if needed. then you will have to figure out a way for it to shift, floor shifter and simple cable or modified stock linkage and all kinds of stuff. it can be done for sure, it just depends how much work you want to put into it. most of it will be trial and error, i have a buddy with a 5.0 f@rd in a nissan hardbody p/u and he just had to go out on his own and learn from there. ![]()

I believe in the forum rules it states if a Ford motor is transplanted into our sacred chevy trucks a permanent ban will be enforced.

Just as long as you know there isnt anything special about that police engine, ecm is still setup with a rev limiter and 114.9mph governer.
As long as you can wire the harness, shove the engine in, find an electric speedo and over come the ABS speed sensors it will work fine. I'd personally check with painless for a harness and the net for an aftermarket ECM thats isnt pickey about VSS signal and all the various sensors not needed for this swap.

a small block Chevy will be cheaper than transplanting some modular crap engine into the truck. drop it in, use your existing accessories, trans, etc, and dont have to worry about "will this fit" or "will that work" crap. work smart, not hard, keep it GM.

Since you have a harness, ECM, fuel system, exhaust, driveshaft, fan shroud, and a few dozen other things to modify this will not be a cheap swap regardless of what you paid for the motor. If you wondering how I know, I'll give you a hint. Those pics I posted are from the LS1 swap in to my 82 Blazer. I have about 10k in that so far. It can be done much cheaper these days, but I digress. I would suggest you try to sell the motor to someone and use that money to buy a complete truck that has a good Chevy donor motor. Even if you have to pay a bit more to get a decent donor, if the truck you buy has parts that can be sold off, you can regain most of your money.... ![]() |

I have a 262 V-6 with a blown head gasket and a rod koncking. I need a 350 to rebuild. I dont want to sink money into the V-6, want a V-8.

I bet you could find a running and driving V8 powered Chevy anything with a bad body, blown trans, shot rear end for $500...and the engine would be a bolt in deal for ya. Look at your local classifieds, visit auctions, go to some junkyards...they are out there.
FYI - here are a couple pics of a truck I purchased for $400 a couple years ago. It had a excellent running 350/th350 combo...but the truck was ugly, the brakes pulled hard to the right, and there was rust and bondo everywhere.

Like mentioned classified adds are great. I took a short glance at the local paper today found a 350/ TH350 for sale $500 seen a few old caprices and other junk for around $500 as well.
The only fNord engine I would ever consider using would be a 300-6 best inline gasoline engine ever built as long as the intake can be sealed.
