rear end question
I was wondering if anyone knew what rear end I have in my truck or could give me an idea and maybe what gear ratio it would be running. I have a '72 custom 20 long bed. The orginal engine was a 292 with a standard 4 speed tranny. right now I have 8 lug 16" wheels and like 32 or so inch tires and it seems like it has problems putting the power to the tires from my 400 engine. the 292 used to like struggle when it was stock to take off in the tires.

If the rear has not been messd with, and there was no option listed in the option sheet, then you should have 4.56 gears.

I don't see it listed on the glove box sheet. It is the orginal rear end and no changes made to it. so if they are 4.56 what would be best to change to for raceing? I plan on trying to go 9 or 12" slicks.

It really depends on a LOT of things.
What RPMs your engine likes? Will there be any street miles? What stall will you get on the converter? 1/4 mile or 18th mile? All kinds of variables. With that being said...that rear is probably best getting ripped out and a 12 bolt put in it's place. There is a limited selection of gears, and repair parts are getting pretty hard to find...not to mention pricey. |

my power band is around the 5200-6000 rpm
it's street driven I forgot what stall converter I have 1/4 mile or a street light
