Need help to drop my truck... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I own a 86 GMC C-1500 pickup, i am wanting to drop the rear of the truck 3" or 4" and the front 1" to 2". what would be the best way to go about this? could i do it myself? who could perform these modifications? Thanks in advance.

Places like Belltech, DJM, Chassis Tech all sell front drop spindles to lower the front 2" They also all sell rear blocks that sit under the axle in between the U bolts. Installation of the front drop spindles is as easy as removing all of the front brake parts, popping the factory spindle out and pressing in the new one back into the ball joints and re-installing the brake parts. Make sure you repack the bearings with grease. In the rear the old U bolts need to be unbolted the block slide under the axle and re-bolted down with longer U-Bolts.

If you go w/a 4/6 drop you can use 2.5 drop spindles & trim the front springs about 1 coil & buy a flip kit for the rear because the flip kits are easier to do since you're just unbolting parts & not drilling out 12 rivets + notching the bed floor for clearance as w/drop hangers/shackles. I do stuff like 67-02 trucks +cars too as a side job so I could prob perform what your needing if your from Dallas Tx.

I used DJM's 3" drop spindle with stock rally wheels on a 85 and there was a clearance problem with the wheel. Had to trim the top of the spindle for clearance. Later went to 17" Torque Thrust II which wouldn't have been a problem.

The max you would want to go w/a drop spindle & stock 15" steelies would be a 2.5 spindle or there will be several interference probs requiring extra effort/labor.

couldn't you just move the leaf springs from on top of the axle, and put them under the axle?

Yes you can do that, it is called an axle flip kit and all the major places sell them! Never done one though so I don't know what kind of parts it uses.
