83 manual 4speed w/od??? worth looking at???
found a boneyard (but complete) 83 that has a 4speed but 4th gear is overdrive... looks to be int he same position as a muncie would be witht he side linkage, but with an overdrive instead... are these good, bad??? it is behind a 305, but it looks to be all factory, including the knob, lever, boot, etc. the rpo sticker is gone thoguh so i cant tell by that what it is...ive seen ALOT of trucks, but none with that looking trans.... going back the yard saturday.. lemme know if its anything to think about...

I have one I haven't installed yet. This trans is in the Chrysler A-833 family. Most folks on the board seem to have a low opinion of it. The Chrysler guys seem to like the A-833 though.

Sounds like it would be a good swap into your '70.
If I could ever find one in a JY, I'd keep it until I get my hands on a 2wd project.

I have one in my 81 pickup, it came as original equipment in GM's fuel economy package, ESC 305, 4spd OD, and 2.56 rear gear. I swapped my gears for 3.08 and have plans to go with 3.73's. I've also heard that the same trans was available behind the 454's in a pickup, but I can't confirm this. It's a good trans in my opinion, they mated them to a 12" clutch. GM referred to the trans as a MY6. The OD is .73. I have an old road test from a magazine from back in 1981, if there aren't any copyright issues I can scan and post it.

what kind of mileage to you get? Does it clear the stock bench seat, I assume it does since it was a factory installation.

DC used them behind I6's and 440's fairly wide range in thier apps. Ive never seen one behind a 454. If you do some digging in the drivetrain/engine fourm theres pics of one installed into a 73-86.

The shifter clears the seat without a problem. The shifters were manufactured for GM by Hurst. |

The A883 that has overdrive isn't the same as what was used behind the 440. It is the same tranny that Dodge used in it trucks that have a rep of being weak. They were mostly used in Diesel apps. They never came in a pickup behind a 454 (last year was 1979 for BBC) or 350 (1980 was the last year for the 350 until 1987 in a 1/2T pickup).
