To much slop np205?????
I have a 205 TC in my 70 chevy 4x4, and when i move the yoke side to side there seems to some slop, but i am not shure if that is normal or not?? thanks for all the help james

I have a high mileage '71 with a NP205 and it has a noticable amount of slop when pushing on the truck when it is in park. I don't know if this was the case when it had fewer miles?

Tough call over the net. IIRC, there is an acceptable amount of play measured in degrees of rotation, but I don't have my Chevy Service Manual handy. Off the cuff, I'd say anything less than 1/4" to maybe 3/8" movement of the yoke ears is probably OK. Without taking a measurement, excessive whine or clunking would probably be more telling of a need for a rebuild. And the adapter's spud shaft could be the culprit.
Gear wear is fairly rare in an NP205 that has had the oil changed often enough. Usually, the bearings wear first and allow the input/idler/output shafts to deflect excessively. Too much shaft deflection can accelerate gear teeth wear and tear since any deflection makes the gear teeth surfaces mate while out of alignment. Heavy or frequent towing can amplify the effect. Though I have no business doing so, I recommend gearheads try rebuilding NP205s themselves. I've found the bearing and seal master rebuild kits for $125 at a bearing sales. A dial indicator is technically needed, but lots of wheelers do without.

The coupler from tranny to transfer is a big contributor to what you have.
