I need help. I am removing the gears from a GM 12 bolt. I got the cover off and the oil out. Also the four main bolts and caps are off. I am told there are c clips to slide the axels out. I am either blind or am looking in the wrong place. I need to know what else I need to do to get the carrier out. IE, where are these c clips located and how to remove them, and if this will free the carrier.

You need to slide the axle shafts in just slighty to take the side pressure off the clips.. Use a magnet if you have one to aid in not loseing the clips into the carrier..

You need to rotate the carrier and look for a 7/16headed bolt thats all by itself.. its actually a "pin" that holds the spider gear shaft.. remove it.. Hopefull it will be whole (they sometimes are broken) it should be about 2 inches long with threads near the top and a round pin for the rest.. if that is succesfull them slide out the shaft.. then you should be able to push in each axle shaft a little .. the C-clips should just about fall out...

you have to pull the bolt holding the center shaft and remove the shaft on the spider gears so the axles WILL push in to get to the c clips. The c clips are located on the ends of the axles. after they are removed the axles will slide out. Here is a pic to show you what to look for.
