Autometer fuel guage
I put all new autometer guages in my 70 and all guages work except the fuel gauge.
When the tank is full the gauge reads "1/2". My truck gets around 200 miles to the tank, when the tank is around 1/2 full at 100 miles, the gauge reads "full". Im just curious to see if anyone has any answers or suggestions to this. thanks for the help.

Do you have the right one? There are two different sending units depending on the year of the sending unit you have.

as far as i know the sending unit i have is the original 1970 sending unit. is there a way to check? I thought about the fact that it might be the sending unit, but the guage is reading smoothly but just not in the right direction. If the float was bad on the sending unit, wouldnt the gauge not read at all? As far as the directions told me, the gauge is hooked up properly to the sending unit.

are you sure u got the gauge for a gm sending unit which is 0-90ohms

There are two different guages and sending units for Chevy. The two will work if mixed but not right.

oh ok, ill have to look into that one. I remeber the gauge being a 0-90 ohms gauge though. Ill have to check that out though. thanks guys

Did you use the wire that comes from the fuse box or did you use the wire that comes from thank. If you use the wire from the fuse box it wont work you need to use the wire from the tank. Just some simple info.

Just a thought, I have replaced the tank in my truck with an under bed aluminum tank from Classic Performance. My fuel gauge was reading backwards after replacing the tank. Classic Perform says they had a few bad sending unit sent out that read backwards, I got one. If you have replaced the tank, you may want to check into this. I checked the resitance at the tank for the fuel sender with the tank full, it should be 90 ohms, mine was reading 4 ohms. You can also check the guage by unhooking the sending unit wire. With that wire grounded to the truck, the guage should read empty (0 ohms resitance) and with the wire not touchng anything, it should bury the guage, way past full (infinite resitance)

One other thing: if you read the Autometer install instructions, it states that the gauge MUST be grounded to the sending unit.
Most will run the guage to a common ground and have it screw up. |
