New guy here in need of a little help . . .
Hello all. Great forum you have here with lots of interesting projects to read about. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I don't have anything flashy to show off - maybe someday when I get my '85 Jimmy back on the road I'll join in. For now I just need to get my old '72 6 cyl. Chevy farm truck back on the road and have a pretty simple, boring question. Hoped in it the other day and patted the accelerator a couple of times to prime the carb. Darned accelerator fell straight to the floor and couldn't get up. I cussed it a couple of times and moved on to my F150 (yeah, I know that's probably heresy here). Finally got around to looking at the Chevy and the little stud that protrudes from the exhaust manifold and serves as a pivot for the pivot thingie (pardon the professional mechanics lingo) connecting the accelerator cable with the throttle cable had snapped off. It appears to have simply been soldered together (looks factory original). The stud part of the contraption left protruding from the exhaust manifold is only about 1/16" long. Too short to do much with. Having descibed all of this, my question is , is the stud threaded, welded, or pressed into the exhaust manifold? I need to extract it so as to weld the two pieces back together and get the old girl back into sevice. I fear that I may have to drill it out and tap the hole. What say you gentlemen? Basically a 71- or 72 has this type linkage set up though this is an automatic trans set up. The stud is turned in I believe on the manifold...should just be swap but might not be so easy as its an exhaust stud..and they tend to sieze.

That's exactly what mine looks like, well, except that mine's just kinda hanging there right now. By "turned in", do you mean threaded in? I can imagine that years of heating up and cooling off have probably welded them together. Do ya reckon I can drill and tap? I assume the manifold is cast iron? Oh, and please excuse my manners - thanks for the warm welcome everyone. Also, a little off topic, but Rod - you're a heck of a photographer. So how would y'all fix this thing? Tom |

I would think that it was just a simple bolt.... but who knows with these things... I would try unscrewing it, but if all else fails drill, tap, and put in a replacement that works. Especially if the goal is to get it to work... you dont have to be fancy.

Well being that I've been here many many years..have an excellent knowledge of these truck.., have been known to borrow a pic off the other great people who know the trucks... I usually know a decent amount to most questions. Thanks for the compliment...I'll have to spread the credit around though.
I have a 70 right now in the yard with a standard 4 speed so not quite the same or I'd have shown a pic of that one.
