Audio for 67-72 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm looking for a decent audio system (AM/FM, Tape or CD) that will fit in my dash without cutting the dash. I have tried two autosound systems (USA-1, USA-3) and am extremely unhappy with the quality of these units. I'm an old f@#t and my hearing is not as good as it once was, but these things would make a deaf man cringe. They also break very easily.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Crutchfield tells me they do not have a unit that will fit my dash without modification.

are the ones you had..like the ones brothers sells? if so im glad i read this..thats one of my next large projects after brakes and glass.....let me see if i can find a pic..thanx. if thats the same kit from brothers im outa options for original style.

That top one is a USA-3. Worst POS I have ever bought. Poor tuning, Not as described n box, and a general junk. Not sure about the bottom one.

I made one of these. No cutting up your dash, and you can put in whatever you want.

I really like that bracket, but I was also wondering the same thing about the A/C. My truck doesn't have it yet, but I will be installing a vintage air heat/cool unit and wonder if that would still fit.

I think the best thing to do is us one of those usa audio deals with a fm changer it has rca preouts so you can run an amp without using the radio.

those radios are made by the same company from my understading. great to know thier junk i was gana lay donw 250 sumthn to get one next month...not now...im gana just put an old school 8track in the dash for looks an do sumthn like kelsfine69 did with sumthn in the glove box. anyone out there got an ol school joint theyll sell me ? thanx. good luck

I was going to suggest checking Custom Auto Sound however I checked their website and it looks like they use the same type of radio you already tried.

Your best bet might be like others suggested w/ setting one up in the glovebox or something like that.

My dash is uncut, although I did cut the dash on my sons' truck for a DIN-size JVC AM/FM/CD that he wanted installed. I have decided that I am going to cut mine, too. There simply aren't enough choices available to us, that are what an audiophile would tolerate. It's sad, too.

I have an AM/FM from a '67-69 Pontiac, with the harness for the Multiplexer, but no multiplexer to attach to it. I think it would fit my truck, but I gotta get it restored before it can be installed....and some Pontiyakker might get interested in it and talk me out of it....with enough cash.

But, I sympathize with you and your problem. Good luck.

yeah custom audio is who makes those radios i posted..thats what brothers carries..if those are the ones he got im at a dead end my self...errrrrrrrr..snarl spit. oh well..

Yes its a NON-A/C cab, but I'm working on a glove box radio panel for A/C trucks that the radio is on the other side.

AM/FM stereo with hook-ups for up to 4speakers on a 12volt system. The
conversion is done inside the case by replacing the original electronics

gator2511, do you think that the glove box idea kelsfine69 makes would work with a radio in it and a vintage air system? If not, I may be interested in that group buy too. I guess cutting my dash is a last resort. Or a console.

$495 seems a little steep! Has anyone actually installed one of those in their truck? I don't wqant to install expensive junk, but I really don't want t cut the dash.

if you are not too fussy about listening to cds, may i suggest getting a satelite radio i just got one a week ago and it is amazing more chanels than you could ever listen too (184) and the audio quality is really good and they can mount anywhere

When you get an AC one done Kelsfine69, post it up and I'll be sure to order one! I don't have AC yet, but since my heater just gave out on me I'm going to upgrade to a Vintage Air Heat/Cool unit.

I put Vintage Air in my 72 and they provided a new glove box with the kit. Its MUCH smaller than stock and I don't think a radio would fit. I had to fab a front wall for the box to get anything to stay in there. The custom autosound radios SUCK!!!

I would like to ask a question that goes in a little different direction. My truck has bucket seats and a console. I was thinking about leaving the factory AM radio in place and putting some sort of after market radio in the console. I don't really carry anything in there and it would all be out of sight. I would then put one speaker under each seat and maybe add the kick panel speakers I have seen. A bracket for inside the console should be simple to fabricate. Power wire in and speaker wires out should be easy also. The one unanswered isssue I see is needing two antennas. Any thoughts? Has anybody done one this way?
