Question Gas mileage - whachoo get?

Just wondering how everyone does on gas. I'm new to these trucks and my project truck still needs a carb rebuild, so I can't complain too much I guess.

Here's my setup: '72 C20, 402, Q-jet 4bbl, 700R4 tranny, Dana 60 with 3.54s

Average MPG so far (70/30 city/hwy mix): 10.8 MPG

Now here's the rule - no embellishing your figures. No rounding up, etc., so I don't want to see anybody running a 500 hp 454 with 4.10s averaging 24 MPG! Sorry, not gonna happen!

Last I checked, with my 350/400, 4.11 gears, I was getting about 12mpg. I could probably get more but it is about 40 mile round trip to get into town on the highway going 75 MPH. If I were just tooling around in town I would expect 13 or 14 MPG, just when those RPM get up to 4000ish the fuel economy dies.

I did a poll recently on here... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=172346
10 -12 is the most common, with 13 - 14 being second most comon.
My 500 caddy with 4.10 gears and 31 inch tall rear tires and a non lock up TH350 gets about 10 MPG in town and on the open road. Which is about the same as my old SWB GMC with a 350.

I have not checked my '70 lately but on the '86 swb w/350 and 350 tranny the last time I checked between 10 and 12mph. Do not know what the rear is guessing 3:73. Does changing over to a 700R4 help much. Also changing to say a 3:08 gears? I am thinking about doing something to help boost up the mileage on the "86.

Built 402 (450HP) with TH-350 and 3:07 gears. 15" tires on a LWB 72 Cheyenne. Getting 7-8 at best on premium fuel but having a great time doing it. Limiting myself to one tank of fuel a month so only weekend excursions.

The 3.08s will help ONLY on the highway and will actually hurt the MPG in town. An OD tranny paired with decent gears will give you the best of both worlds.

stock 350(Qjet, points, stock air cleaner), TH400, 4.10 No-Spin rear, 33" mud tires. i'm getting about 6-8 in town, maybe 10-12 on the highway.

69 short stepside with a 75 Impala 350/th350, 3:73 rear gears and it weighs 3700 without me. I get 16 town & 16 highway. (yep, same both ways)

I can live with my mileage, it's not bad. I drive mine daily. My 72 Chevelle w/307 gets the same thing.

Last time I checked mine, it was 15.3 on a cruise on the Natchez Trace Parkway from Nashville, TN to Jackson, MS. HOWEVER, since then, Putter and I swapped rear axles: I got his 3.73 and he got my 3.07. Since my speedo isn't accurate anymore, I haven't checked it since, but suffice to say, it ain't gettin' 15.3 anymore!

I get 16+ consistent w/230/3sp/3.73, but I drive like an old man, got 18.5(!) last tank going really slow(gas was over $3 a gallon),, my 64 w/350/700/3.42 does about the same. Brian

My '97 Saturn gets 30 city / 38 highway

But the best I ever got out of my '72 C10 was 13.5. Needless to say I don't drive it anymore.
