HELP; Replacing ignition module.... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

First time I have done this...I have a OEM HEI ignition on a 84 C10 -w- 305 V8.....was taking the old ignition module out of the dist, and noticed some "white" paste underneath the module....is this supposed to be there? Is this some kind of high heat, high energy ignition paste of some sort to coat the bottom of the IM???

You should write a little How-To on this when you are done so I can do mine as well.

the white paste is called heat sink.usually come's in a small package,smear the back of new module with it and put it on.the module can get pretty hot and the heat sink helps get rid of the heat so new module don't overheat.it should come with new module but check to be sure before leaving store.if you don't use it you will be buying another one very soon...

You da man!!! I was going to get another module this afternoon and was hoping someone would answer this....APPRECIATED!!

I hope this fixes my intermittent starting problem....I figured out it was not doe to the accelerator pump, or something with the carb....was getting gas and the choke was fine......was not getting spark !!!

............I could tap the Ig Mod and then it would crank up.....

It is Dielectric grease and is necessary to protect the module.

yes it is an electrical paste of some sort it has to be there or the module will burn out i installed one the other day on my truck and the box the module came in had a little tube of clear paste in there i asked about it b/c i have seen the white like you discribe they said this works as well i believe they said it was silicone? best luck
