My son has an sm465 4 speed with granny in his '74 and you cannot downshift into first at all while moving. Check out this site....

Back when I was 16 and worked for a lumber yard, they had a couple of GM 1 ton trucks with the 4 speed granny manuals. While heading back into the yard one day I managed to downshift from first into low... and promptly ripped the driveshaft and centerbearing clear off the frame when I came off the clutch.

So, my advice would be that even if it's possible to downshift into low with the vehicle moving... don't.

Actually if you go by the factory knob, you can downshift to first just not low.

Cool

Got one in my 80 Scottsdale. No synchros to Low/1st gear. I can sneak it in at about 5 mph.

Ha, I got the same exact tranny and I enjoy it. But yeah, I need to be pretty much stopped to put it into low. It will go into 1st when going pretty slow.
