Project Tangelo
***06/03/07 UPDATED PICS ON THE LAST PAGE*** I got this last week for a killer price but it is a lot of work to get the right stuff, like a wiring harness. Here is the first task I took on, unless you count that I installed 2" springs, 2 1/2" spindles and shocks. Before During After I will post an after once I get the new one in, hopefully this weekend. Oh yea, Here is what it looked like before it was tore down Mike Last edited by BigMike; 06-03-2007 at 08:39 PM. Reason: It is no longer NEWLY AQUIRED and is more accurate |

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
Wow that is one hacked up dash. Why would someone butcher a dash that bad is beyond me. Despite all that it looks lik the rest of the truck is in very good condition....

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
It is in excellent condition...Just a few tiny rust problems, not like most of the trucks I've seen. Only a few small pinholes on the drivers side floor. Oh, someone tried replacing the passenger side rocker but, they only replace the part you see with the door closed I have a new rocker on the way so it will be back to good. The reason I was told it was replaced was because of some damage with a rock or log or something...We'll see.
Mike EDIT: This was the strangest place for rust...... Last edited by BigMike; 01-12-2006 at 04:40 AM. |

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
I have to say I really like that color too, that would look great on a street rod also.
Where did you get that patch panel for the corner of the door? Here in Illinois thats a common rust area. I have couple of doors like that on a project I'm starting right now. By the way, your dog is really freaking me out ! Reminds me of the movie 'Pet Cemetery' or was it Cujo?

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
Just got in my new Painless Wiring Harness + A/C Wiring Harness as well. I think I am going to try and paint the firewall and interior before I install the wiring. The Painless setup looks very impressive...

Busy Weekend
Well, it was a busy weekend. My buddy came by on Saturday and we busted out the heavy guns. We stripped the bedsides, top and doors to bare metal...what a pain. Today I removed the nasty old carpet, put the wheels on the front and put it back on the wheel dollies so I can move it around a little better. I am hoping to have ALL the paint off in a couple 2-3 weeks. The reason I am removing the paint is because of the terrible Laquer paintjob that was pealing off.
The metal is suprisingly bondo free, just a couple spots on the bed that are a bit bigger. I will try and hammer it out a little more to use less mud. Here are the pics I still need to find a good passenger side fender If nothing else, the Pomona Swap meet is December 4th so I should be able to pick one up there. Mikw |

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
Finished Up Roughing In The Drivers Fender And Bedside, Filled In The Factory Spot Welds In The Drivers Door Jam, Stripped And Primered The Drivers Hinges. We Put On A Couple Of Heavy Coats Of High Build Primer - Good Day. Now I Will Be Spending Several Hours Block Sanding And Block Sanding Until It Is Perfect.
I still need to find a d^mn passenger side fender. I will remove the pass door so I can work on the inside of it, cleaning up factory blemishes as well as a couple small dents. I also have the hood and inner fenders to contend with. The hood should not be too bad, but I need to strip the (inside/outside) inner fenders. Mike |

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
Most of the big stuff was done with a grinder/polisher with a 9" pad and 80 grit disks or a DA with a 6" pad and 80 grit disks. The smaller stuff was done with a die grinder with 2" & 3" proloc disks (80 grit, coarse & medium scotch pads). I also used my dremel to get into the real tight spots.
If you have never used a grinder/polisher with a 9" pad and 80 grit disks, I would not make your first try to be on your truck. I had done this years ago and learned early on to be careful of the edges and corners. The 80 grit can make a mess of your body very quickly if you are not careful. It would be better to use the DA and 80 grit as it is more forgiving. Mike |

Thanks, I have a ways to go to reach the level that your truck is in. I am going to be picking up a Sata NR2000 HVLP here real soon. The firewall and cab insides are finally ready to shoot. I cannot believe how anal I have become over the years, I keep filling all of the factory welds that may be visible after paint....what a pain. I started with the spot welds in the firewall and have progressed to the inside of the door jams and driprail. I keep saying that this is too overboard for a daily driver, but I cannot stop (maybe I need therapy ). Here are a couple more shots of recent work. I welded in the round "cup" that the factory jack hold down spring was located, then mudded it up. I was doing the factory welds where the cab comes into the door jams and I noticed this indented circle. So I made it look like the drivers side, nice and clean. Oh yea, check out where the spot welds USED to be in the door jams (IMO how it should have looked from the factory). BEFORE AFTER Mike Last edited by BigMike; 07-08-2007 at 10:01 AM. |

I just bought a Sata NR2000 gun on ebay last night, I hope to get the firewall and cab inside painted in the next few weeks (House of Kolor Tangelo) so I can start running my wiring. Mike |

Re: My newly aquired 69 shortbed with factory air
Well, it is time for some updated pictures. I finished up the inside cab area today and snapped off a few pictures. I had originally shot it all at once which was a huge mistake. Inadequete lighting, ventilation and space made for a bad job! I could not see half the time with the paint burning my eyes, I even had on paint goggles. So I waited a week and wet sanded the whole interior down again. I then masked off panels to do seperately, more controlable. I used the factory assemble lines as my masking ponts to prevent tape lines, I have to tell you, it turned out far better than I could have imagined. I will never do anything that big in my garage again, I don't mind the little tasks, but I will shoot the larger stuff in a paint booth (if I can find one now).
Anyways, here are the pics - I hope you like them.
