I'm new to the web site and have a question about gas tank on my 75 k10.I was wondering if there is a factory recall on them, because of the side impact test.

I can't belive no one has replied to this yet!

Anyway's to the board!

No theres no recall for the tanks.

BUT!

If you owned an eligible truck on 4 july 1996 you would have received a letter from the class action settelment law office and it stated you have two options.

1 You can receive a "settelment Certificate" for a discount on the purchase of an eligible new GM vehicle that you could use yourself, give it to a family member residing in your household, or sell it to a third party.
OR
2 For a limited time take advantage of the "Cash Alternative" and receive a check for $100.00 by selling your Settelment Certificate to Certificate Redemption Group. 30 days from the date of this letter 18 april 2001 after that the amount will be reduced to $75.00 and may be further reduced or discontinued without notice.

It was discontinued.

The Settelment Certificate was for $1000.00 valid for use for a total of 33 months.

After the initial 15 months it can be used to reduce the purchase price by $500.00 and it could be freely transferred to a third party but it's discount value is reduced to $250.00.

I have more info if you need or want it.

Hope that answered your ?

Re: gas tanks

There is no recall and there was a certificate as Bruce indicated.

More info is the whole concept of the tanks exploding is a joke. The tests were rigged by the media.

Re: gas tanks

humm,,i thought that was the reason they moved the tanks to the passenger side and you can no longer get a driver's side fender with fuel filler door????

Are you talking about the switch that occured in 1978/79? That was from passenger side to drivers side. The reason you can't get a passenger side filler on the 81-87's is only because no one makes it in the aftermarket, and the other side is more popular.

no,,i have a 1976 k-10 and have hunted high and low for a ("driver's side) rear fender with a fuel filler door and can not find one,,,,everyone i have communicated with informed me the tank's were moved to the passenger side because they were on the driver's side on the "outside" of the frame and were prone to explosion on side impact...i have no idea if i have been misled or what but i ended up having to move my tank to the passenger side of truck....hope i am not hijacking this thread,,just thought this info might help BROSKE with his question,,although i'm curious myself now...lol

Re: gas tanks

You have been misinformed by unknowing sources.

From 73-78/9 the standard single tank truck had the gas tank mounted on the PASSENGER side. DUAL tank trucks of course had them mounted on both sides. The majority of trucks came with single tanks.

From 79-87 the standard single tank truck had the gas tank mounted on the DRIVERS side. DUAL tank trucks of course had them mounted on both sides. The majority of trucks came with single tanks.

This is the ONLY reasons you only find Passenger side 73-78 bedsides with gas cap opening and Drivers side 79-87 with square gas door opening.

The reason they moved to the drivers side in later years from what I understand is so you wouldn't have to walk around the truck to fill them up, but definitely not because of the lawsuit that was for ALL 73-87 trucks.

The silly lawsuit wasn't about which side the tanks were mounted on, it was about them being mounted outside of the framerails.
