ps gear box rebuild
Ok, I am in the process of rebuilding my ps box, and I need some help, can anyone recommend a way to get the large ring off of the end cover on the box? The directions say to rotate the ring until it lines up with the hole in the end cover....i can't rotate the ring at all. Also, can anyone give me an idea of the tricks and additional tools I will need once I get into the box itself. Being as its almost 40 years old, I would like to replace every and any seal, o-ring, teflon seal, etc that I can....the ps fluid that came out of this box was crude oil BLACK....so I would rather replace everything at once.
Next will be the ps pump rebuild....any specific tools I will need in this venture would also be appreciated. Thanks

Re: ps gear box rebuild
I rebuilt my box and as I remember I soaked the snap ring with PB Blaster. I did have to make a special tool to install the steel balls in the worm gear. I used a 14"piece of broomstick and cut grooves in it using a bench grinder. It was a crude tool, but it worked. If you have the chassis overhaul manual it will certainly help. Make sure you count those steel balls. when you take it apart the little devils will try to run away from you. NAPA sells a master rebuild kit that includes the steel balls and everything you need to rebuild it. I have not tried the PS pump, but a reman unit can be purchased for under $50.00. You can also order the PS pump rebuild kit for about $16.00. If you want a pic of that "special tool" just let me know and I'll shoot a pic. Good luck!

A pic would be appreciated, kinda playing this whole thing by ear, and any help I can get is great. I tried to drill out that ring in the end cover.....but I think my bits are getting a little dull.....so any tips anyone has would be great!

Re: ps gear box rebuild
ok, finally got the snap ring out, it involved a small drill bit cutting a notch in the ring, so I could use a punch to do drive the gap together.....then bending a craftsmen screwdriver pretty badly to pull it out.
On to the next problem, I can't get that stamped metal lock ring off the stub shaft, I tried to use channel locks and a punch, but that too didn't work, is there a special tool to get this off that I am missing? Also, any pics of the special tool to install the steel balls would be appreciated....i took that portion of the box out inside of a plastic tub, so none of them got away from me.....do I need to fill that piston with a thick grease to hold the balls in place?

Re: ps gear box rebuild
You will need to pack the cavity with a thick grease. Here's a pic of the tool I made.

Re: ps gear box rebuild
how do you make sure you get the pitch right? Can a tool like this be purchased somewhere....do am I going to have to make one? (bench grinder is 700 miles away right now, and I would rather not buy a new one).
