If it says so in the glove box...it's prolly a 2wd Vin code is my guess...

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
Weird that his number is a San Jose prefix but says the truck is in Lodi. Wonder if he knows the difference between Big block and small block. Some think that the 400 was a big block.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
The whole "400" thing is a pet peeve of mine...........but I quess that it is really GM's fault. The only true 400s are small blocks. The big block version is really a 402, but GM in their infinate wisdom called them 400. Why? who knows.....maybe just to confose things? it's not like they saved any money by not making a 402 emblem, they put those on Chevelles.
My truest pet peeve is to hear someone say..."Small block 400". A lot of "car guys" speculate that GM went to the 402 from the 396 so that the big block wouldn't be smaller then the biggest small block. But the truck badging doesn't bear that though out. |

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
Hey Longhair, how about the fact that in the 1970 chevelle, the 402 was badged as a 396.
I have an "original" BB 4x4.It says so on the glove box. It was an original Big Block 2wd,that had a damaged frame.Put it on a 4wd frame.

its been deleted...is that because you called him on it?
i hope so. One thing i hate is seeing a "heavy duty 1 ton" with a 10 bolt in front.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
I contacted him last week and he sent me a pic of the RPO sticker, I think it tells the story. Started life as a 2 wheel drive long bed, thats a long way from being an original 4x4 short bed, let alone a big block truck.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
I have a factory 400 in my`72 K/20.It has 400 emblems,too.LOL!It`s a small block.(Sorry Longhair,GM made me do it since they called the 402 a 400.If they hadn`t done that,we wouldn`t need to say small block 400).
The factory originally put the 400 in a newer truck and the body is off a`72 C/20 w/402.It`s all factory GM,but I built it Mines a 4bbl.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
I was told the 396 was bored out to 402 because of oil consuption issues, but to cover the fact that the pre-69 bbc 396's had been burning oil, they kinda left the whole issue grey....

I agree with ya longhair, "small block 400" sounds dumb but even worse is "big block 400". That one really burns me! Just because it said 400 on the fender doesn't make it a big block. By that way of thinking, apparently my truck has a small block 460! (454+.030)

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
Weren't the "big block" 400s considered "400-4 barrels", and the small block 400s considered "400-2 barrels"? I believe so, since a two barrel carb is all you could get in the 400 small block cars of '70-'72.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
I heardthat before also.
But again, there was/is no such thing as a 400 big block. Big blocks were 396 or 402 (even though the fender badges might say 400) Small block 400 was, well 400.

Re: another one claiming factory big block 4x4...
I never heard of 2 barrel small block 400 or the 4 barrel big block thing. I know that in 70-73 if it was a 4 barrel it "might" be a 4 bolt, but I've seen 4 barrel 400s in the late 70s. Anyways, heard that if it said 400 on the fender, it was a 402. GM did some crazy stuff back then, so who knows. How can that guy call that truck all original if the VIN says a 2wd long box?? Does he really think that everyone else is as dumb as he is??? Sorry, but that IS just dumb, like saying you have a big block 400 chevy.
