Re: Protect-O-Plate

Roger...do you have a protecto plate that shows any of that info?
If so, you are the ONLY one who does.

Re: Protect-O-Plate

I have 3 protect-o-plates: 1969 Chev, 1970 Chev, 1972 GMC.

I have literature concerning 1968 & 1969 Cars and Trucks Protect-o-Plates (dumb luck as it may be).

Fortunately I see have both a plate and the literature for 1969.
Surprisingly it looks like the literature matches what's on the plate. Wow.
From this 1969 Chev protect-o-plate and literature I can see:
- VIN Number (duh)
- Carburator Code "R" = Rochester
- Engine Number "V0325U5"
- Rear Axle Number "JQO318K"
- Vehicle Build Month Code "3" = March 1969
- Transmission Number "N9S16"
- Chevrolet Trade Mark.

1968 is very similar except that they had the last two digits of the paint code on there also (since all paint codes started with "5" ) or else an "SP" if it was special paint.

This '69 plate came out of a Junkyard many years ago so I can't go back and look for these numbers on the truck.

These 3 plates all have 6 fields of info in about the same place on the plates so I presume it is safe to assume that the field locations mean the same for the 1972 one (?)

You may have tried it but Google on 'protect-o-plate decode' and you will get a lot of info for cars, but I haven't hit on anything about pickups and trucks. Bummer.

HTH.

-Roger

Re: Protect-O-Plate

Now looking more closely the picture posted by 68haywagon, that protect-o-plate looks just like the '69 plate I have *except* that those 2 digits in the top right corner of the picture should be the last 2 digits of his paint code found on the SPID sticker in the RPO column.

If his signature is correct saying he has a 1968 Longbed in "white" then the paint color for a 1968 White is "521". The embossed two digits in the upper right hand corner looks possibly like "21" too me, but it is not real clear in the picture. Which would then match what the literature says.

-Roger
P.S. I see the hand written date on the warranty card below the plate in the photograph is 1968 so I assume that his picture and truck all match.

Re: Protect-O-Plate

Yes that is the original plate to my truck, I found that and a few other things in the glove box the day I brought it home. This is what is on my protect-o-plate:

.......26..........CS148T119313.....R
F0201PF.........HA0126K.............1
M8A18...................................(Chevy emblem)

There is a sideways chevy emblem where it says (chevy emblem) under the 1. The paint code is "4526AA Off-White" in the glove box.

I don't know what any of those numbers/letters mean, I haven't researched it yet.

Mike

EDIT: it wouldn't space out right so I put those periods in to make it look right, the periods are not actually there.

Re: Protect-O-Plate

Check this out:
http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#POPCodes
Yeah, I know the information is for Camaros, but it is basically the same for any Chevrolet from the era. I have a few POP's out in the shop, and can dig them out if needed. Also, see here:
http://www.gmcpaulstruckparts.com/67-72_chevy.htm
for more decoding.

Haywagon's decodes as:
26 - paint code
CS148T119313 - VIN
R - Carb code, Rochester
F0201PF - Engine assembly date code, should match the suffix code stamped on the front pad of the engine, assembled Feb. 1 (1968) at Flint, 250ci six cylinder.
HA0126K - Rear axle code, should match the stamp on the front of the passenger axle tube, 3.73 ratio, assembled Jan. 26 (1968).
1 - Accessory code, I'm not sure what this designates for a truck.
M8A18 - Transmission assembly code, should match the date code stamped on the transmission. I don't know what "M" designates, but it is a 1968 transmission, assembled January 18 (1968).

edit: It is true that the owner's name wasn't stamped into the plate, since the plate was made at the factory, but it was embossed on tape and affixed to the plate at the dealer.

Roger, I also have a POP with "U5" at the engine suffix. I assumed that this was a mistake, and that someone put the wrong stamp in the gang that day, but maybe it was intentional. Was the truck built at the St. Louis plant?

Re: Protect-O-Plate

I will have to post the numbers tonight when I get home. I just want to know what transmission and rear the truck had in it new. The engine is the original from 1967!

Re: Protect-O-Plate

Leonard, it was built at Tarrytown of all places.

"1" in his example is the build month. "1" = January 1968.

Aug '67 = 8
...
Oct '67 = O
Nov '67 = N
Dec '67 = D
Jan '68 = 1
Feb '68 = 2
... sequence ends at July '68 and starts over for production year 1969...
Jul '68 = 7
Aug '69 = 8
...

Thanks Leonard, I think between the two of us we nailed this topic. I believe I don't have the axle/trans/engine decode codes to break the numbers down more - thanks, was wondering about them...

Re: Protect-O-Plate

HA1213W is the rear end code, and will be stamped on the passenger side axle tube, facing forward. HA=3.73 assembled Dec. 13, 1966 W=the manufacturer code.
M7510 is the tranny code, I assume it's a manual three speed? 7=1967 model year The 5 should be a letter and stands for the month of assembly, I haven't ever seen a number in that location, and 10 is the day of the month.

Re: Protect-O-Plate

ItMightScrape, Well it's been a year since you asked this question, but I see your still active, so here goes. I've been researching the P-O-Ps for our trucks lately, and that's how I came across this thread. From what I've learned so far, this should do ya.

03 = 503 light green paint exterior

CE247Z12xxxx = VIN Number
C = 2wd
E = V-8
2 = 3/4 Ton
4 = pickup Cab & Bed
7 = 1967
Z = Freemont Assy Plant
12xxxx Build Sequence number Starts at 100001, so yours is number 2xxxx built

R = Rochester Carburetor

V1209YH = Engine Number
V = Flint
12 = December
09 = 9th day
YH = 1967 327cid 220 hp

JS1129G = Rear Axle Code
JS = C20 with 327cid, gear ratio 4.57
11 = November
29 = 29th day
G = Detroit Gear and axle

Z = Build Month, December

T328T = Transmission code
T = Powerglide
329 = Julian date, November 25th
T = Truck

Under the Z you should have a Chevy trademark. It's a bowtie turned on it's side, it just means Chevrolet.
