72 W/ Leaf Springs
I have a 72 shortbed with leaf springs. Did they come factory like that. I've talked to a few people but everybody i talk to says they didnt come factory. I dont know. I was looking for a way to lower it. I found a DJM flip kit will it work though. and whats the best way to lower it and get the best ride for the front. i going at least 5" with the flip kit in the back.

Re: 72 W/ Leaf Springs
I have never heard of a Chevy with leaf springs. The GMCs came with leaf springs. Maybe someone swapped frames. I am building a 67 GMC and have shortened the frame. I now have a 67 GMC short bed with leaf springs.
I am going with the flip kit also and will then use 3" drop springs in the front. |

Re: 72 W/ Leaf Springs
You could order the Chevy with leaf springs from the factory. Check the option sticker on the glove box and see.

Re: 72 W/ Leaf Springs
and not all GMC trucks had leafs, there was a short period in the 67 - 72 that the coils were standard on the GMC's

Re: 72 W/ Leaf Springs
kbs71 and Longhorn Man are right. It seems the 'rule of thumb' is that Chevy's had coils, and GMCs had leafs. However, I've seen leafs on a Chevy and coils on a GMC.

http://www.earlyclassic.com/tech.ASP...=Spring%20Time I'd use spindles and springs up front to match the rear flip kit. Good luck. Last edited by 84 PUMPKIN; 12-29-2005 at 12:27 PM. |

Re: 72 W/ Leaf Springs
I am sure these numbers are common thru the '72's, but someone with specifics will jump in and correct me, if needed:
In '69, the option "Suspension, Rear Leaf" says "C10 Chassis-Cab and Pickup models only. Includes 1250-lb capacity each two-stage leaf rear springs and HD rear shock absorbers. The option number is G70. MSRP $26.90 (April, '69). Now, for the fun part. IF your truck had the leaf spring option (G70) and the original order also wanted to upgrade the capacity of the suspension, they would have specified Option Number G50. That would give a suspension rated at 1750-lb capacity, two-stage, for C10's only. MSRP $7.00 (April, '69). The general understanding is that GMC came with Leaf springs, while Chevy came with coils. But, either could be ordered to replace the "standard" suspension spring system. So, whether or not we have seen GMC's with coils, or Chevy's with leafs, is just a matter of time and looking. The 4WD half-tons, came with leaf springs all the way around, but the fronts were tapered with a capacity of 1400# each, while the rears were two-stage with a capacity of 1800# each.
