Truck stinks like gas!
The inside of my truck stinks like gas really bad.I thought maybe it was the gas cap not venting. So I bought a new one.Still does it.So I removed the cap altogother.Still the same thing.
Is there another vent.I removed the tank to drain it.(The truck sat for around a year)It sat that long and it was fine.I don't know of any other vents. Has anyone else had this problem? |

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
What year is your truck and where is the tank? I assume it is in the cab. All of the trucks that I have had a in cab tank have always smelled like gas. I will be interested to see if there is a fix.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Check it to be sure that you don't have a fuel leak under the hood.. If your cab's not sealed up tight at the firewall a leak under the hood will stink things up fast.. G/L

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Replace the hose or hoses that is on the sending unit on the gas tank. I had the same problem and my wife would not drive or get into my truck. My truck is a 72 so my has 2 hoses. It was $5 fix. Good luck.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
It might also be the o-ring seal on the sending unit that's leaking. They tend to get cracks in them.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
You say it sat for about a year? Sounds like dry rotted hoses. New fuel vent hose should do the trick, not sure how the 69's were plumbed though. Oh yea, check to see if the pinch welds at the bottom of the tank are seeping like mine were. I had to use a gas tank sealer kit to fix it.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
My pops had a 62 that smelt like gas for 20 years. We all just lived with it, till he sold it to me and I got to looking around and sure enough, it was the gasket aroung the sending unit (trank in cab) I bought a new gasket and that fixed it! Mom was not happy. Still took out the seat and mats and washed them cause of 20 some odd years of having gas run down the tank.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Mine smelled too. Changed the hoses and gasket, still smelled. Finally took the seat out and cleaned everything. Found a hairline crack in the tank. Couldn' t see the crack, but could see gas seeping out. Ran the gas down to below the crack and JB Welded it. No wonder PO had the dome light bulb out.
NOTE: JB Weld is an epoxy putty. DON"T WELD YOUR GAS TANK

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
About 5 years ago I started smelling gas and it turned out to be a piece of gravel that had gotten wedged between the floor pan and the bottom of the gas tank, eventually rubbing through the tank and causing the leak. And of course, that was the last place I looked. Look for any damp or wet spots, and get it fixed ASAP, truck fires are NOT a good thing. Good luck with it!

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Something similar with mine, except it was a peice of glass from a broken window. Had a small pinhole behind tank you couldnt see until it was removed. Took it down to the radiator shop and had it repaired, replaced all hoses. Now no gas smell for over a year now.

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Thanks for all the comments.
When I put the motor back in the truck I removed the tank and drained it.Maybe I somehow messed the seal up with the sending unit. My truck has a metal fuel line. Then it goes to rubber then back to metal that runs along the frame.I plan on getting a new 3/8 sending unit anyhow.Just a reason to get it sooner. |

Re: Truck stinks like gas!
Maby it's just a California emissions item, but does your truck have the interior breather tubes that run up into the back window pillar? My truck had this setup till I switched the tank out with a standard and cut the damn tubes off. No stink since then.
