1/2 working parking brake

My parking brake only works going forward? The truck is a 3 speed so the transmission is really my parking brake. Any ideas??

If the pedal is still 2"-3" away from the floor when you have the E-brake fully engaged and the truck still moves, it's possible one of the rear cables that go into the backing plates could be hanging up when they are pulled part way out or even froze up solid with rust. With the truck on the level and shut off with the wheels blocked, have someone apply the parking brake while you watch the cables under the truck. Make sure both cables are being pulled out of the rear most cable housings when the parking brake is applied. If they are both being pulled out of the housings when the E-Brake is set, you can see if they are applying enough pressure by raising the rear wheels put the truck in neutral and try to turn each wheel to see if the E-Brake mechanism inside the drum is working on both wheels. I've seen where someone didn't install the ends of the cable in the lever inside the drum and I've seen it where there were parts missing. If all is, as it should be, your E-Brake should hold your truck on almost any grade with it in neutral. Rebuilding my E-Brake system from one end to the other was one of the first things I did when I bought my truck 3 years ago because of some of the grades I have to park it on around here.

Parking brake is necessary in ittsburgh. I paid a fine for not having a operational parking brake when I was a lad.
