I have a problem
I went to go nad start my truck today and it wouldnt turn over I thought it was the battery because it was pretty much dead and it wouldnt keep a charge so I got a new one and put it in and the same thing happend. I went to turn it over and all it did was make a click click click sound and the fan would move a little bit with hesatation. what could this be? can anyone help me with this ongoing problem. what should I do.? the motor is a 350 by the way

If its a brand new battery and the charge is good on it, then your next step is to pull the starter and take it to Auto Zone before you spend any more money. They will tell you whether or not the starter is the issue. This seems most likely to me IF you are certain that you have a good battery. It wouldn't hurt anything to take it with you to A.Z. and have them check it out. Even new parts aren't always good parts.

Starter solenoid
Starter Bad ground connections somewhere Bad positive wire connections I'd check all of your wire connections to the battery first and make sure the terminals and connectors are clean. If there is heavy corrosion you may want to clean the wire connections in the battery terminals (mine were real crusty and cause the truck to not start once.) Could also be the solenoid on the starter is going bad or the whole starter in general needs to be replaced.

Starter could be drawing a lot of amps. This will sound crazy, but the for sure way. Take the starter, alt, and battery to a checker, autozone and hve them tested. If one is bad then replace, if not then it is probably the key switch. I am sure there are many ways to check on the vehicle, but I like to test the components and know for sure what is not working and then replace, as you could start replacing components to the tune of $100's of dollars and still not fix it. You may be able to jump it (get it running) and drive to one of the above places and have them diagnose in the truck. One other thing, the voltage regulator could be hung open and drained the new bat as well. It is a long list, but check them all and you will find the culprit, good luck.

This may not help you but this weekend we had the same problem with my neighbors 72 GMC. We had the alternator, starter and dead battery tested at autozone. The alternator was good but the starter smoked like nothing else and something had drained the eight month old battery. So we replaced the starter and battery. Reinstalled the new stuff and then we did a voltage test and found out that 10 was the output. Out of blind luck, we pulled the voltage regulator and it was falling apart. We changed that, retested and the output is 13-14.??. Alternator is charging the battery, no more clicking and his truck starts and runs smoothly. Like I said, this may not help, but this is what we did this weekend for a similar problem.

usually its a small seperate black box (about 5" X 5") mounted on the radiator core support on the drivers side.

ALL THIS MAY SOUND ELEMENTRY TO YOU & IF IT DOES LET ME OPALAGISE (SP) IN ADVANCE. PULL YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON & SEE IF THEY LIGHT UP. THIS WILL TELL IF YOU HAVE JUICE IN YOUR BATTERY OR NOT. NEXT..TURN THE KEY WHILE SOMEONE IS WATCHING THE LIGHTS... IF THEY DIM ALOT WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY... YOU'VE GOT A DEAD SHORT SOMEWHERE. IF YOU HEAR CLIKING WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY, WITH A GOOD BATTERY, THE STARTER CELINOID IS OK & DOING ITS JOB. NEXT TRY WACKING THE STARTER WITH A HAMMER. SOMETIMES THE WINDINGS ON THE STARTER ARE STUCK. IF ALL OF THIS CHECKS OUT OK, OR IF IT STARTS AFTER WACKING IT, I WOULD PULL THE STARTWER & HAVE IT CHECKED. JOHN

well i tryed the hammer and when I went to go and turn it over all I had was a click click noise from me trying to turn it over. I had more clicks without the hammer dont know what better but I know that the + wire from the battery going to the starter is warm do you know what that means?

unfortunately I don't know what the warm cable means, but my gut is still telling me its the starter, and the method mentioned above doesn't cost you anything to get it checked. Starter is easy enough to pull. Its just 2 bolts + the electrical connections.

The cable is warm because it's getting a lot of amps pushed through it at a high resistance. The starter is stuck or there is a short in the windings to ground and it is drawing a lot of amps. If any of you has tried to turn a new tight engine over it will cause the starter to draw a lot of amps.
I don't know how autozone tests starters but they have to be tested under load to be tested properly. It sounds like you may need a new one. VV

The same thing happened to me and it was my ignition switch. I bought a new battery, starter and had the alt. rebuilt and still had the problem. The switch had a short in it. Lamar.
