Price check on a 4x4

I'm going to look at a 1970 chevy 4x4 shortbed stepside tomorrow. The owner on the phone said it is in "solid" condishtion and just needs a "little" work and a new paint job. He has owned it the past 15 years, keeps it in a garage. He rebuilt the 350 a few years ago, 40k on it now. It has a 4 spd, p/s, drum brakes. What is it worth? thanks

Re: Price check on a 4x4

If it really is a solid truck, (not full of cancer) I'd say in PA a truck like that would go for at least 3K. Let us know the "real condition" when you see it

PS, bring a magnet and flash light

Re: Price check on a 4x4

Without more info it's pretty tough to say. "Solid" to a seller may mean "rusted out POS to a buyer." Options count for a lot, also. Tilt,tach,posi,a/c....Give it a good exam. Crawl under it and check for rust, and fluid leaks. Brakes, tires, exhaust, etc can add up in a hurry.
Good drivable low optioned truck without a lot of rust...I'd say $2500 would be a great buy, and up from there depending on options and condition. But I wouldn't be afraid to spend more if it's clean and what you're looking for.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Re: Price check on a 4x4

Take lots of pictures, and take a picture of the build sticker in the glovebox when you go check it out. The guys here are great at noting rare or value adding options. Bring a magnet, flashlight, and and ice pic (for underneath) and check all the regular places for rust (Cab corners, rocker panels, cab floor, cab floor support, kick panels, front fender by bumper pull back the floor mat and watch for floor flex).

You can find solid 4x4 trucks around here for $1500 if you're patient and like to talk to old farmers. If you get in a hurry, you'll buy a POS for too much money.

Don't forget the flashlight
