th350 vs 700r4

is it true that a 700r4 will bolt to a 205 set up for a 350 by cotting off the tail shaft i realize the 700 is a little longer and will require relocating either engine forward or t case rearward and new drive shafts which i need any way i'm just weiging my options as i only want to do this once i have both tranies and a bopc 350 i'm using a pontiac 400 engine so i have to use an adapter plate to use the 700 i have 4.10 gears and either 29 or 33" tires this will be used as a driver and a tow rig also how much will it take to make the 700 reliable for towing 6-8000 # i would love to hear pros and cons of this combo thanks jim

Re: th350 vs 700r4

It's been about 10 years since I converted my brothers 82 1 ton from a 4 speed manual to a 700. I had to put a I'm thinking 2" block on the back and then chop the output shaft by I think an inch and it is still working today. It's a nice setup and with his 4.56 gears it just made a whole new truck out of it. I would say that with the tire size you are running your gears are not going to be low enough to run in 4th while towing, but would be ok by itself. To make the trans good for towing I would install a beast sunshell and maybe 5 pinion planets and 29 element sprag, pop the checkball out of the input shaft so the TCC applies faster, a nice external oil cooler and make sure the lockup is working or it will not last very long.
