Woohoo!

Got the stepper running tonight

However, soon after startup she started knocking a bit... It isn't a loud, harsh knock like my 305 in the 89 just before it blew up, but its definitely knocking.

I'm gonna change the oil tommorow, and check all the lifters and stuff to see if it goes away

Took it for a quick spin around the sub-division, and I must say, it feels pretty good to drive a real truck again. Just turns way too freakishly sharp -- Going from an extended cab longbox to a shortbox is a pretty crazy contrast, lol Bit squirrely in the rear end with the flatbed on the truck too... I'm thinkin she'll be getting a real bed pretty quick. Just buy a junk shortbed, and store the step bed till spring.

That terrible knocking is an oh so familiar sound to me. My 305 did that before it blew.

Haven't heard it start up since. Maybe one of these days I will again.

I don't think a bed will make much difference in the handling. My experience has been the SWB gives a little harsher ride, a shorter turning radius, and provides excitement on ice and snow.

You’d be surprised what a little weight in the back will do for ya on ice and snow. I usually have and extra 220lbs in the back of my truck and the difference is incredible.

Do like a couple of the guys do at work if a motor is knocking...floor that thing against the rev limiter till it blows, then get a new engine.

Its called smog heads and a q-jet!

Shes knocking pretty bad -- It'll need a new engine for sure.

Look for the 77-stepper series. 01 is the knocking from the engine compartment, 02 is the engine knocking from underneith, with a quick rev, 03 is the exhaust from behind. Notice the nice black stuff coming from the tailpipe -- Also smokes out of that pipe, while the other side doesn't.

I've got a good 350 sitting in my shop at the moment. Its sounding like it can be mine for 150 bucks (guy pulled the 350 out of his crewcab, and replaced it with a 6.2. The engine ran great beforehand!)

So, hopefully it'll be sitting in my engine compartment all nicely painted up before the end of the week
