carb rebuild kit contains....??

I am going to be rebuilding my carb shortly, and I just wanted to check, what all comes in a carb rebuild kit? Springs, jets, gaskets, ?????? Or is it just a basic gasket and oring kit....and I have to go buy springs and jets seperately?

Usually not jets or needles (unless you get lucky enough to get a NICE kit), but you'll get all the gaskets, an accel. pump (or two depending on what type), clips, ball-bearings, bowl inlet jet, needle for the float, and sometimes the float itself. You'll also get instructions, and information on how to adust the throttle linkage.

The most valuable parts are the gaskets and the accel. pump.

Mostly rebuilding a carburetor is getting rid of all of the deposits and gum that builds up and wrecks performance. Get a good cleaner (gallon or two), take the carburetor apart keeping track of where everything goes and in what order. Then soak all of the metal parts in cleaner (WELL VENTED AREA) in a big metal container over night. The next day wear a mask and some gloves, and scrub everything down with some brushes and some residue-free cleaner like brake cleaner, dry, and re-assemble with as many parts as the kit will give you.

***Be careful with the screws that hold the plates in the throttle rods for the primaries and secondaries (if a 4bbl). Those little brass screws are "staked", or deformed on the bottom with a punch and a hammer once they've been installed to prevent them from backing out and traveling down an intake to wreck your day. If they come out they may be brittle and break off. You'll have to remove them, and make new ones. It's not hard. You just have to have a grinder to grind the heads down a bit, and you may have to cut them short, and stake them yourself once they're installed. A carburetor shop may have some around...

It's pretty fun working on one of these actually. You learn a lot about how they work.

Oh and make sure you get the make and part number off of your carb when you go shopping. If it's an aftermarket job you can usually get rebuild kits off of the manufacturers site. If you have an old Quadrajet or old Rochester 2bbl things can sometimes be challenging. I've noticed that most stores don't know what the hell they're doing when they look up the number and hand over a carburetor kit. 9 times out of 10 it's the wrong kit. What kind of carb are you running on yours? Mine has a Carter model YF, which seems to be in the minority. But none the less, I was able to find the proper kit at the local auto parts store with everything I needed. Pay careful attention to the float drop measurements, you can start a fire pretty quick with a carb spewing fuel everywhere.
