manual to power steering
Hi everyone, I'm new at this site and love it. I found it when I was looking for parts for my 68 GMC, 3/4 ton 4x4. I am restoring it. My dad bought it new in 68 and he is 84. I am currently down to the bare frame, new rockers and cab corners, and cab is ready to paint. It had no power steering so I am mounting a power steering sector and need some help. Do I need to build a bracket, space it out, or section the frame? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My frame does not have the dimple, Thanks P J
I'm trying to put a picture on but have no idea how. Last edited by Dads 68 GMC; 02-04-2006 at 03:58 PM. Reason: adding pic |

Re: Pj
to this great board from PA! there's a wealth of info here, if your frame has a dimple on the side where the PS box mounts you should be able to mount the PS box without any other mods, a bolt on deal.
Oh and you must know, we like pics

Re: Pj
As long as there is a little dimple in the frame you should be good to go.
This is the dimple I am talking about...look at the indent in the frame on this picture from my '68: http://satellitehead.com/images/68ch...teering002.jpg Meanwhile, if you want some pictures of this process, please check out the specific gallery showing pictures of my upgrade here: http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thu...s.php?album=10 There are about a dozen pictures that might help. I will tell you the one problem I had: the damned bumper support on the drivers side needs to be notched to fit properly now - this was something nobody else told me about. You may find the same problem on your end, or maybe not...

Re: Pj
I just did this to my 67.I just heated up the frame a little bit with a torch and added the dimple. Worked out great.

Re: Pj
I would highly recomend NOT putting spacers there....one of the aftermarket vendors who does not come around here sells a kit what is nothing but a spacer. Sad thing is, they are a well known company in the suspention industry and most take everything they say as fact.
The 4X4 trucks frequently have cracked frames in the steering gear box area. Adding a shim or spacers will increase the leverage on the bolts, and can break bolts, or crack the frame. Also, this will throw the geomitry off, and wear the gear box out prematurly. |
