my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
well installed my stereo today. kenwood deck, rockford 10's and an old sony amp i had laying around. thats hurting my ears a little bit....but whats really gettn me is the squeeling coming form under the hood. it started about 3 weeks ago..i got new belts. tryd some belt dressing, tryd some soap(trick my stepdad showed me) every thing seems to be str8 as far as the belts. but the funny thing is when i turn off the radio it doesnt squeel..but when its on...OH yeah...it sucks. this started when i put my new lights in also, the apc buckets with H4 bulbs. when i turned the lights off the squeel would stop. it would only do it when pulling from a stop ...so from idel to higher rpms then would quite on its own.now with the radio its squeeling non stop. it seems strange to me this would be a power issue. becuase i had this same amp in this truck before i took it apart. but not these lites.. any ideas fellas. do i need a higher out put altenator? what? im list on this one. althougth the system is plenty loud enough to drown out the squeel....IT STILL DRIVES ME
NUTS...HELP.thanx...oh and here are a few pics to sacrifice to the picture gods...enjoy thanx. w. the inside is starting to trans-form. im wanting to keep and older "look" to everything at first glance.. but have some hidden goodies here and there.... mr rockford in the back...hits pretty good. box will get covered when funds allow. for now itll look woodgrained. new wheel also...lil close....but some times you makegoofy sacrifices just to look cool...ha. |

Re: my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
your overworking your Alt.That's the squealing.
The voltage reg. is trying to compensate for the amp demand and ends up increaseingf the field resistance so much it causes the belt to slip(squealing). With all youe electrical ugrades, amps, high wattage lights, etc you exceeded the capacity of your alt. A higher amp rated alt should solve your problem.

Re: my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
You can never have too much. Even if you get a higher amp alt you are going to have problems with dimming lights on a heavy bas**** and you should install a good stiffening capacitor for your bass amp at minimum

Re: my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
that's crazy, never seen a non-capped system in my life not make the lights dim at least a little bit. i've seen a cap kill the alt load you're talking about though. admittedly, you should upgrade the alt either way...

Re: my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
Did you install a relay with those H4 headlights? Also, get a 120 or 130 amp alternator, and a cap. check out www.madelectrical.com

Re: my ears hurt...need help..seriously.
TX Firefighter can probably help you out more on this one with all of the pics and detail that he can give you. You just need to install a relay up near the core support near the drivers side headlight. That is where it splits to go over to the passengers side headlight. I installed some Hella H4's on my 66 Chevelle and used a pair of relays mounted up by the horn on the drivers side inner fender. The old wiring can't handle the extra voltage and current of those H4 bulbs.
