Oil Pressure Problem
I fired my crate engine up over the weekend for the first time and for some reason the oil pressure is to high. It has a high volume pump, breather and a pcv valve. It was at 75 at idle and a bit over 100 when reved and it blows the dipstick out. Any ideas what the problem could be? I thought maybe the breather was too small on the valve covers that came with it so I switched to these Moroso's from my friend and it helped lower it a little but still popped the dipstick. I'm scared to let it run long and blow a gasket. Besides that it sure sounded nice. Its uncapped so I had quite a few neighbors come outside to see what it was.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
Raidermanny : I also had this very issue with my engine. What I did to correct the issue was simple. I unplugged the oil fill hole and used a oil breather fill cap. The problem went away of blowing oil every where. I do not see a oil breather fill on your valve covers. Larry

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
Are you sure that you didn't get a high pressure pump instead of a high volume pump? What kind of oil are you using also.
I see the breathers on the valve covers. Sounds like it might be a combination of high oil pressure and the rings have not seated yet causing high crank case pressure which would explain the dipstick being launched out of the tube. |

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
Oldiron is onto something here . I did not recongnize the chrome jobbies as breathers. I'll stand down .

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
I'm using non detergent sae 30 oil for the break in then I will go synthetic. Do you think I should run it to try to get the rings to set or is this going to cause harm?

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
The rings normally seat within the first few miles/minutes or they don't seat at all. How long have you run it? The oil pressure and the crankcase pressure are two seperate issues. It's not unusual for a new motor to have high crankcase pressure for a short time as the rings seat, but is *should* subside. Have you checked the oil pressure warm AND cold. My current motor has 75-80 lbs cold idle and then drops to 55 lbs. warm idle idle. The it climbs to the 80-85 lb. mark at higher RPM's. The general rule of thumb is to make shure you have 10 lbs. of oil pressure for every 1000 RPM's you're turning. So my oil pressure is good for 8500 RPM's. My oil pump is the melling HV oil pump with the bypass tapped and plugged.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem
Where did you get the motor from? I would call them. I;ve never used sae 30 wt in anything. I put some in my s-10 2.2 4 banger and the valve cover gasket started leaking shortly after. Put some silicone on the tube and push into place. We do it on 6.2's all day long. black rtv
