Power steering hoses help / questions

So, as some of you know I'm dropping an '01-02 LS1 into my truck, I'm in mid swap. I'm having some hose issues.

Here is my PS Gearbox:
http://satellitehead.com/images/68ch...teering011.jpg

It has two threaded plastic nuts in it, but at the auto parts store, the low pressure hose is just a tube with no fitting. WTF? Is that correct? Why do I have a threaded nut in my PS hose if that's true?

I have a high pressure line for the '01-'02LS1. I bought a high pressure line for the '68 C-10.

I guess am going to have a hydraulic shop graft the two together and have that part done, I'm just stumbling on the low pressure side.

Just a side note: NAPA said they don't make custom hydraulic hoses, even though I've been told by at least 3 people (including the person I talked to on the phone) that they do. Note to self: Never trust my local NAPA. (Pryor St., Atlanta)

Re: Power steering hoses help / questions

I just changed the high pressure hose on my 71 4x4 last weekend. It had been rubbing on the frame for a long time and finally wore through.... anyway, the auto parts store told me the same thing when I called.... the return line is standard hose stock with a hose clamp on each end. I verified this when I was installing the hp hose but, didn't pay much attention to the fittings that screwed in to the pump and box. This is the original 350 so, not sure about your LS1.

I guess maybe I need to know what the low pressure fitting on a stock steering box looks like. Because - see in the picture linked above - it looks like it's a threaded hole to me ...

Re: Power steering hoses help / questions

On every vehicle I have had to replace steeering hoses on the low pressure line is just that, clamp on rubber line. I had to cut and save the original metal tubing that went into the box and pump, then attach the new hose line and clamps to those. High pressure lines normally always come as the completely premade line.

You may have to try and get the fitting from the yard or an old set of lines. Be aware that on the LS1 set up they use O-ring fittings, while linesfor our years use flared pressure fittings. I am not sure what your box uses.

Re: Power steering hoses help / questions

i just install the p. s. hoses on my 68, saturday(ls1), i bought a 3/8 x12 brake type line, it is the correct size for the low pressure on the steering box, then cut it an half and use a clamp, you need to make a sharp bend right after the s. box or drill a hole on the inner fender.

Re: Power steering hoses help / questions

I found the part with Josh's help - the people at hte parts store have no idea what they're doing - as usual (both NAPA and Advance).

I found someone at a hydraulic shop to do the high pressure hose for me. Can't wait to have it hooked up and be done with it

Thanks for your input guys.
