Power Steering Control Valve same as 63-82

I called Melrose T-Top International, who specializes in corvette parts. I heard in another thread that this is the same power steering control valve as the 67 power steering on our trucks. The guy that answered said that it isn't the same and he wouldn't let me send mine in as a core, and he wouldn't want me to install one and have it fail on me. He said to jack the truck up and move the wheels back and forth by hand and that will show me where the problem is, cus i don't know how to tell if the PSCV is even bad or not. I've been turning the steering wheel back and forth in the play, which is extremely excessive. What do you guys think?

Did he happen to mention what is different between a Corvette control valve and a truck one? NAPA lists the same control valve for '65 Chevy pickups and '79 Corvettes (NSP 526623). As far as your excessive play is concerned, you basically have to check everything, tie rod ends, idler arm, ball joints, wheel bearings, and steering box. There should be some play in the control valve where the Pitman arm attaches to it, but not too much. Does the power steering work? If the control valve is bad, sometimes you only have assist in one direction, it might be stronger in one direction, or it leaks. Also, an out-of-adjustment control valve can cause the truck to pull to the right or left.

Re: Power Steering Control Valve same as 63-82

he didn't say what the differance was. they look exactly the same to me. My power steering works, and my truck doesn't pull, but i just have play from about 10 o' clock to 2 o' clock and after having someone turn the steering wheel back and forth in the play the only thing that was moving was the power steering control valve. I'll have to hook the power steering control valve back up and do some more investigating.

Nate dont forget if you check the play with the engine off you will get alot more play in the valve than with it running. The valve wont use full travel running under normal driving conditions. If it does then it is probably too loose. John

Mine pulls to the right how can I tell if mine is adjusted right? Also when you say control valve is it the same as the gear box?

Re: Power Steering Control Valve same as 63-82

The control valve is not the same as the gear box. What is being discussed here is the type of power steering system that uses a hydraulic cylinder mounted on the steering center link, with a control valve where the Pitman arm attaches to the center link. It was used until mid-'68 on trucks, but was also used on Corvettes until '82.
