Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
I took a break from welding my floor in a week or so ago, and decided my wheels could use a good cleanup. I thought I wanted something fancier, but these actually are starting to grow on me. Here's how I got them on the truck, brush painted orange 15x8 truck rallys. It actually came with full rings and caps!
And when I took the rings off, I noticed minimal change, as they never painted under them...... The center caps were pretty ratty, in my opinion they were pretty well unuseable.... But after an hour on each one with some paint, polish, and a lot of steel wool, they looked pretty good. The rings just needed a good polish as well.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Next up were the wheels. I did the ones on my charger 5 years ago with this method, and they've held up in all seasons (They were painted while on the car too) so I figured a modified version of that paint job would work great on my summer truck. Sanded all the orange off, scuffed up the silver and proceeded with 2 coats Tremclad primer, 3 coats Tremclad silver, 5 coats Krylon clear. Here's the result:
And mounted with rings and caps (Ignore the lug nuts, they need replacing BAD) They're no billet 20's or anything, but they look great, cost nothing but a bit of paint and some elbow grease, and they really suit the truck in my opinion. A job well worth it in my opinion.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
wow, you did a really nice job on those, I'm lovin the yellow bowtie. It's amazing what difference a bit of elbow grease can do, it reminds you that money isn't always what you need to have something great.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Are those rings 3 inch? I am looking for some deep rings like that.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Very Nice. Now just squirt some of that tire dressing on the rubber. That will bring it all out.
Longer days and warmer weather are coming. Whoohoo!

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
That'll do it right there Mudpile. You just can't improve on the factory look of the rallys. I think they look better silver than any other color. It goes with just about anything. Where'd ya get the new centers for the caps?

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Those look great. I really like the silver. I am in the middle of getting mine blasted and ready for paint. I am torn between silver or black.
Probably go with the silver Jason |

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
They look great, I did mine basicaly the same way Except I used chevy rally silver and krylon clear coat. I will try and get some pics. But it is amazing what a little hard work will do for some good old rally's. Nice job.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Thanks for all the compliments guys! To answer a few questions:
76Bonanza: I've never measured, but I think the rings would be about 3". Oddly enough, three of them are that mild brushed finish you see there and one is chrome. I never noticed until I polished them all. Boog: The centers on the caps are not new. I masked them off carefully and painted the black portion of them. The bright yellow and bare aluminum were already there and in good shape. Two of them had gold bowties, but again on the truck I never noticed. I still have to mask and paint them yellow.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Looks great! On the center caps, have you ever stripped the paint on the base where the lugs go through? It`s chrome under there.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
An SOS pad works great to strip the silver paint off the caps, but grab a new one when the pad runs out of blue soap. With just the steel wool it WILL scratch the chrome if you are pushing a little too hard. I have a couple caps I won't use due to this. Muddpile those wheels look as good as mine that I had done at the body shop..very nice. FYI new repo stickers are for sale here on the board from PT's 70 CST, and they look just like the yellow ones in the pic here. I bought 2 sets and they are good quality, printed on foil just like the GM ones.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
Real Nice job Muddpile !! I used this method to get the paint off my cap bases. Go to a body shop and get some of their good paint thinner which is 100 times better than the stuff Canadian Tire or Wally World sells. Put an inch or two of the thinner in a steel bucket or bowl ( plastic will warp from this stuff) and do it outside (or after you sniff the fumes you'll take a trip without leaving the farm) and let the thinner work on them. After a half hour of soaking the paint will fall of the base of the cap leaving the nice shiny chrome with no scuff marks and you didnt need any elbow grease.

Re: Freshly Restored Rally Wheels
53burb, the paint is just plain old silver Tremclad Rust Paint (Similar to Rustoleum) that I bought at the local hardware store in rattle cans. The primer is Tremclad as well and the clear is Krylon.
Already Gone, that is a great tip. I cleaned all the paint off one cap so it was all chrome, but decided to re-paint it grey around the base instead. Lots of people do polish them entirely though I've noticed.
