I am finishing up the frame and suspension and am about to put the drivetrain in. One of my buddies said he moved the engine brackets(on his truck) that are bolted on the front crossmember forward about 2 inches to allow for more room between the engine and firewall... The truck had a 307 and a manual 4spd. Does anyone have any comments on this? I will be putting a crate 350HO in the truck.

Why would he need to do this? There's already 6 inches or so between the dist (HEI type) and the firewall.

not sure... he just said it was a really tight area to work in until he moved the mounts forward. is this a bad idea?

He had the wrong stands if it was tight and he felt the need to relocate them forward.

Stock small block stands bolt into the front set of holes and allow lots of room between the engine and firewall. No holes need to be drilled either.

My gm HEI is right up against the firewall. I think it would be nice to have the extra room, but don't know what other mods you would have to do. Maybe it's diff. for 4wd's??

4 wheel drive is different. The engines were mounted further back than 2wd's.

Right on TX but you can use the rear holes on a 2wd allso,Dist will be close to firewall but still accessable.I have mine in the far back holes on my 69 I installed a TH 350 TRANS in place of a 3speed and didn't want to lengthen drive shaft.

TXFF, he lined up the back holes of the stands where the front holes on the Xmember are.

i have a 67 gmc 2wd i used the rear holes and 6 cylinder mounts a 350 tranny the tranny mounts perfect (the crossmember and shifter lingage) the drive shaft fits perfect I was wondering and reading other threads about this same thing, why if iused the 6cylinder mounts should bring the whole combo back 3 1/2 inches why all the stock tranny mounts work this is very interesting l would like to here more input thanks

oh yes i dont have the cab on yet so i dont know how tight the dist will be

here is a pic of mine in the rear set of mount holes with using all stock holes for tranny(oh yeah factory hoses worked perfect for radiator)

I mounted my stands between the 6 and 8cylinder holes and it seems just right with a 383 and 400 tranny. I do have a different front crossmember though.
