2004 5.3 with 88 700r4. Help!!!!!!!!

I have a 88 700r4 from a suburban, how hard would it be to run this in my 72 blazer 2wd. The motor came with a 4l60e but I was told it being a 4x4 tranny that I would have to change the shaft to a 2wd shaft. I have the 700r4 from the 88 but what about the cables that operate the 700r4, I know the shifting linkage will work but I don't know about the kickdown or how that would work in the 5.3. Thanks in advance

Re: 2004 5.3 with 88 700r4. Help!!!!!!!!

the computer for the 5.3 depends on the trans to be there to function properly. you would need to eliminate the circuitry for the transmission and have the computer programmed to function standalone without the transmission. msd also makes a unit to run the fuel injection and coil packs on the ls series engines in cases where you run an older style transmission. the tv cable is probably going to take some fabrication to set it up properly but its not impossible. depending on your gearing and tire size a th400 or th350 might be a better easier option

I have a turbo 400 also but wanted to go the overdrive route. I was wondering if anyone knows of this install. Thanks for the advice.

The 700 uses a TV cable to control down-shifting that you will need to mount to your carb/intake. I'm sure there is a bracket available for this type of thing. I do know that having the cable properly adjusted is very important.

Of course, if you want the ability to lock the torque convertor like from the factory, you'll have to get another kit to make that all work.

Shouldn't be a big problem -- only thing I'm not sure of is the bolt pattern of the 5.3 vs the 700R4.

I would honestly go with the 4L60E and jsut change the tailshafts and output housings. In my experience 4L60E are the more reliable of the 700r4 family. It's not too bad ot go into and and just change the shaft.

I would swap out the output shaft and then your electronics would work. I've rebuilt a few overdrives with homemade tools and a cheap trans. repair book, so far no trouble.

WOW, your a brave man, but considering that I just saw an overdrive add on at an auto show that cost $3000 to install I think that I might have to start fabbing me up an overdrive

I appreciate all the info, I will check into swapping the tail shafts out. I was just thinking the 700r4 since I had it and it works good.
Thanks, Kade

I was looking on summit and Lokar makes a kit were you can use the factory coulmn shifter with the 4L60E. That would make things a lot easier. May stick with the 4l60e.

Problem solved. I called the guy I got the motor and trans from and he said he would swap the 4x4 tranny for a 2wd tranny. I am going to use the 4l60e now. This is what I am working on.Name: Blazer 014.jpg

Re: 2004 5.3 with 88 700r4. Help!!!!!!!!

700r4 has a different bolt pattern than the 5.3. On the 4l60e, make sure it is a 98 or later ls1 tranny, or 2000 or later truck when they went to the 5.3.

I did'nt mean to sound like it was as easy as swapping out a starter, but changing the out put shaft is easier than doing a complete rebuild. If you were close I would'nt mind helping you out.

Re: 2004 5.3 with 88 700r4. Help!!!!!!!!

If it is an 04 it probably dosent have a throttle cable so there would be no way to hook up the tv cable. you would have to get an aftermarket PCM and a throttle body that uses a cable.

Is your tranny a (4L '60' E) or a (4L '80 E)? Should be an 80.

Any interest in selling the 4L80E?

Yeah mine is a throttle by wire motor. I think the 700r4 would be a little too difficult. THe trans is a 4l60e i think.

The 80 only came with the 1500hd or higher and never came with a 5.3 the 85 came in the 03+ big block burbans 2500's the 65e came it the 1500's with the 6.0 like the SS and denaly and caddy. they are comming out with a new tranny the 6L50-80-and 90 that are going to be in pretty much everything except the trucks with the duramax.
