Anybody have an opinion on axle width for a jeep?
Im trying to come up with a good width for my cj-7. I currently have a full width dana 60 front and a 14 bolt that has been cut to 62.5 inches. The bad thing about the 14 bolt is it was cut for a fj-40 and the pinion is offset to the right 6 inches. Ill probably end up selling that and cutting down a different 14 bolt. anybody know a good width to go?

a full width 14 bolt should be fine, since the dan 60 is still full width. Shouldnt be any problems there...

If they stick out too far just use a deep backspacing wheel like 5 inch.

If you are OK with the width of the 14bolt go ahead and use it. I wouldn't be concerned about the off-set. The u-joints don't car which direction they are correcting.
Back in the late 80s I put a front axle in the rear of an 87 C20 to give it four wheel steering. The axle was totally stock from a replacement parts standpoint. That makes it far easier and cheaper to repair, should it be necessary. This put the differential well off-center with no problems what so ever. |

You could go with a Cab&Chassis 14bolt. They are 63"WMS instead of 67".

So running a offset rear and a centered transfer case output wouldnt wear out u joints or break them easy? I planned on cutting down the front 60, if i dont go full width. Im really considering going full width though. With a huge offset wheel, i guess it wouldnt be all that bad. maybe some humvee wheels.
